Oh wow - just realised that we played the first game without starting francs/coal - thought it was a bit masochistic!

Second game much more sensible - managed 366. Daughter improved to c. 120 but still struggling with the efficiency vs strategy decisions.

Great game - so much to do, so little time.

I think you played a different game. This one is called Le Havre.

Whoops! I can't even use the excuse of posting from my phone because I definitely did this from a computer with a nice full keyboard.

Don't not ruin the fun by reading forums on strategy until you've played several times and are looking for new ideas.

The points come from big point buildings and shipping big. Explore ways to get there by the late game. Use special buildings that pop up to give you an advantage.

You dont have to pay 1 franc of interest PER LOAN? It you have 9 loans and get 1 one more, pay 10 francs?

No, that's what I just explained. You pay one single franc of total interest each round (or possibly two with the expert variant) no matter how many loans you have.

That's why I say "Don't be afraid to take loans!" Loans are cheap, and well worth it.

Always maximise what you do in a single turn. Turns are the most precious resource in the game.

Is there any way to check witch version I found on a store?

Copyright:2016
code: M3518

Mayfair edition

The guy on the phone told me that the box behind says 160 cards included.
In their site says 110 cards.

So if i go there and see that there are 160 cards then is the 2017 version with the expansion Le grande hameaux included?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Sorry for my english

I have the new 2017 English version with all the expansions and this sounds right. Mine says copyright 2016 and the number of cards matches, though when he says 160, he is including things like loan cards and turn overview cards which is unhelpful - but I got my calculator out and it does all add up to 160. The important thing is that it should say "82 special building cards".

Mayfair Edition already says it all... definitely the new version.

Another way to tell is, if the main board is just one foldable piece, its the new edition.

Soren thank you for your answer.

I was afraid that could be the Mayfair 1st edition (I don't know if they reprint only when there are not copies left)

About the one main board I couldn't open the box before to buy it.

Thank you all guys, you are awesome.

This is the first Mayfair edition. There has never been a Mayfair edition before this (the previous ones were by Z-Man).

new goal! every Uwe Rosenberg big-box game by the end of the year!

i neglected to mention this last week - but it's been 1 year since i started this blog! happy birthday, blog! :meeple:

Games! 8/14: meetup at YFNTTS in Newington, CT

Played: Merkator, Carreau, Crokinole, Zooloretto the Dice Game and Blueprints. Earlier in the day played golf Crokinole with my grandparents and kids.

Uwe Rosenberg is certainly my favorite board game designer. Given this fact, I've made it a personal goal to play all of his big-box games by the end of the year. Merkator is one of his lesser known games, maybe because it's not a worker placement game - it's pickup and deliver and may be more abstract than most of his well known games, though I found the theme came through well! In the game players are traders or merchants, moving goods around Europe and the rest of the world, fulfilling goods contracts for money and victory points. As you travel to collect goods, you'll cause other areas to create more goods - making your opponent's turns stronger. You can also follow your opponents to locations by paying a time resource. The player interaction is pretty good with these mechanics - a number of times players were upset when an opponent went to a spot they wanted and took a big pile of goods. This game isn't too bad to teach, though some clarifications were needed during the game. The art isn't very exciting but it's functional. The resource boxes are very convenient - nice designer here. This game plays pretty quick too! Just over an hour with rules and it felt faster than that! I really liked this game as did all my opponents. I was 3rd/4 by 1 point - argh! The game might have a bit more luck than I want in this type of game. I'd need to play more to really assess this so for now is a 8/10. Might be a 9/10 if I can determine it has more strategy and less luck than it first appears.

Uwe games I need to play this year: At the Gates of Loyang, Ora et Labora, Le Havre, Cottage Garden, Caverna (lower priority - played at the end of last year). Caverna is the only one i've ever played so far on this list

I'm still loving Carreau! So fun! Can't wait for the Kickstarter campaign! It's going to be awesome. I'm pretty sure I've won every game of this I've played so far. Won two games last night! 9/10!

Crokinole is one of the greatest games ever, of course. In 1 week I'm co-hosting my first Crok club meeting in Hartford, CT! Very excited! I very quickly won this 4-player game - my partner was on point! 10/10.

One friend I played with last night was a fan of Zooloretto, but had never seen the dice game - so we did! This is a simple roll-and-write dice drafting game. Super simple to teach and play, very fast. Nice art, good quality dice, the score sheets are super colorful and made of thick, high quality, paper and they are double sided. Fun game! I won! 7/10

Finally: Blueprints. This is another dice-drafting game - you are building structures with the dice and collecting sets. Each die color scores in a different way. Each round you're trying to get the highest scoring building for victory points and there are some additional awards if you manage certain specific types of sets (same face value, same color, etc). I really like this dice drafting game. It's easy to teach and play, looks cool, plays fast, has great player interaction. I tied for last in this game with just 5 points. 9/10.

Oh right - in the morning I visited my Nana and Papa - who are both golf fanatics, so I thought that they'd like my golf Crokinole board. I played a game with nana and my kids played a goofy round with my papa (the kids are too young to really understand the rules, they just love flicking the discs).
