Controller of the disk's buildings.

Not saying you're wrong, but where does it say this in the rules? I could not find it.

From the Buildings Overview book (emphasis mine):
A player who enters the Clay Mound receives 3 clay from the supply, plus an additional 1 clay for each hammer shown on his building cards

Similarly for Colliery:
A player with at least one Hammer on her building cards receives 1 additional coal.

Fishery:
In addition she receives 1 additional fish for each Fisherman that is shown on her building cards.

Town square:
For each Craftman's building that he owns, the player can take one upgraded good from the supply.

When in doubt about this stuff I always consult the amazing geeklist Extensive Le Havre Buildings Reference and FAQ

Couldn't find it in the rules or in the forum.

If there is a harvest at the end of a round, do you get extra grain / cattle if you have bread or meat in you supply. Or do you only get these if you have grain or cattle?

only if you have grain or cattle. You can't plant bread or breed meat... Also, 1 or more grain produces 1 grain, while 2 or more cattle produce 1 cattle.

You need at least one grain or two cattle in order to get more. Thematically you plant and get more grain and two cattle make a baby cattle. Meat and bread cannot multiply or magically create more wheat or cattle :P

Thanks, seemed like the most logical but better safe than sorry :-)

2 or more cattle produce 1 cattle, 1 or more grain produce 1 grain...but you cannot get more than 1 of each per harvest, no matter how many cattle or grain you have.

I know, that part is explained perfectly clear in the rules.

Well, to be fair, so is the part about only getting cattle from cattle and grain from grain... ;)

Not really, hence the question :) The fact that you can only get 1 extra of each however is mentioned specifically in the rules.

Here is what the Z-Man rules say "In the Harvest, players receive grain and cattle. A player with at least 1 grain receives 1 additional grain. A player with at least 2 cattle receives 1 additional cattle."

I've tried squinting at it, but it still seems to say "with at least 1 grain" (and not "with at least 1 grain or 1 bread") and "with at least 2 cattle" (and not "with at least 2 cattle or meat").

No, no, it's a good point. Come to think of it, the rules don't say that you DON'T receive a free steel for having one steel, or a free brick because you have two wood and are playing blue. There are all kinds of ambiguities open here!

A Sensitive and Considerate Le Havre-r

by Tony Boydell

We (well, I) tried something different at the Ross-on-Wye boardgamers meeting last night as, for the Nth session in recent memory we had the not so magic number of 'five'. As much as I love the many excellent and proven games in our collective collections that support this number, I have a shed and library full of past and Spiel-recent goodies that stop at four and refuse to go any further; and let's not forget those that purport to work at such heights but really only functional properly with fewer. It's becoming a gear-grinding, arse-chafing chore.

Somewhat optimistically, I packed Lorenzo il Magnifico anyway along with - and this is the experimental bit - Le Havre. Becky had been introduced to it earlier in the year and hadn't been put off; I believe this is thanks to her Inland Port/Glass Road/Ora Et Labora (and even Harbour) exposure - these refined and re-jiggered descendants paying homage to their venerable ancestor.

While the dance of Concordia, Puerto Rico, El Grande et al played out in the snug Prince-of-Wales corner, I suggested that we split TWO and THREE: me and Smudge taking Le Havre and the others (Byll, Boffo and Jobbers) whatever else they fancied. There was a little resistance to this idea to begin with - though not from Becky particularly - as if some unwritten, but wholly signed-up-to, Club Regulation had been violated; nothing controversial but, maybe, a tinge of surprise as to have been put forward in the first place. We're a funny bunch, aren't we? I do believe we actually LIKE being together!

Smudge agreed and we set ourselves up to one side, leaving the boys to delve in to Cuba + expansion*:

I endeavoured to keep the flow of the game steady and offered advice where necessary; this was not to be a competitive session - selfishly, I would like more chances to play this with people 'for real', so wanted to give Becky a full and rich experience: I am a sensitive and considerate Le Havre-r, after all. A couple of interesting Le Havre: Le Grand Hameau special buildings came out too (including the Trading Post which allowed Becky to convert cows in to Iron quickly) and, by the end of our 90 minutes, I think she got to see all of essentials. She asked to play it again soon, so: "achievement unlocked".

The Cuba game was temporarily paused by Jobbers' extravagant, though accidental, sweeping of his player board (with tiles, resources and dobbers) off the table. This, along with his Tourettic "I hate whistling!" outburst, are the only things I can recall of what the others were doing, so focused were we in our happy chit-fiddlin'.

My original plans for the evening - free from Gloucester pick-ups - were scuppered as we packed away both Cuba and Le Havre (simultaneous game-ends FTW!) and I now only had half-an-hour available. Boffo displayed his box of filler goodness and we plumped for Unexpected Treasures which, with five, was pleasingly bruising!

In summary: set collection where who gets to pick what - and subsequently cash in for VP cards - is determined by the simultaneous (blind) playing of an action card: low numbers go before high numbers, but collect fewer chits, and ties mean only one at that number will collect leaving the other(s) empty-handed for the round.

Becky ran rings around us once again - as she so often does with fillers like this - by letting the boys all pick on each other! While I was hobbling in the wooden spoon slot with 80 pts, she was waaaaaaaay ahead on 140-ish.

*this is also a bit of a milestone on account of Jobbers having poo-pooed this excellent game for years only for this to be the second time in as many months that HE has requested the playing of it!

Friday 25th November - A Rosenberg for my Rose

by Ben Bateson

It had been over a month since I had seen Tony, and I was rather looking forward to his cheeky smile and rapier wit once more. Instead, I face the following - verbatim - Facebook Messenger exchange

Tony: How many tonight?
Me: Five
Tony: Arse

Which I - correctly - interpreted that the huge shortlist of two games that he wanted to play (presumably Round House and Tasty Laurence) wouldn't accommodate that many. Still I loaded up the games bag with plenty of outstanding five-player fare: Concordia, Keyflower, Princes of Florence and El Grande.

Tony didn't want to play any of them.

Instead he preferred to play a 2P Le Havre with Becky, while leaving John, Bill and I to Cuba. Another game, incidentally, that would have been more than acceptable with all five of us playing.

Assuming - incorrectly - that Bill had recovered from his chronic 'how NOT to place your buildings on your plantation board' syndrome, I opted to throw the El Presidente expansion in: a first for any of us. There has been a lot of guff talked here about how the expansion 'completes' Cuba. Well...it's a good expansion, and I enjoyed it a lot, it fixes a bad Start Player rule, and I'll almost certainly include it every time now because it doesn't add any complexity. But it would be stretching a point to say that the base game is unplayable without it.

Remarkably, John used to badmouth Cuba, but he's been recently transformed to one of its biggest proponents. Truth is, he had the lead from the opening round and - pausing only briefly for a classic John-ism* - managed to keep it throughout, despite a late charge from myself. I still need to win over Becky (and Dan), but Cuba is belatedly becoming part of a favourite rotation for the rest of us.

I suppose the one bright side of the anti-social Le Havre table was that it finished concurrently with our rum'n'baccy exploits, so we had time to all congregate for a game of Friese's excellent double-guessing game, Unexpected Treasures. It might be a mite crowded with 5P (God knows how it plays with 6), but it didn't stop Becky proceeding to a huge win.

Tony had been untimely called away for family duties, so we had about an hour to fill. Various permutations were proffered, but only Buccaneer managed to meet with everyone's favour (it really was one of those nights). This is one of those uniquely Stefan Dorra games which really seems to simple to work but is actually hugely fun once you get stuck in. It also seems to be a particular favourite of John and he managed to win once again.

So, the practical upshot was a night when no-one seemed to want play anything that anyone else wanted to play. Roll on Christmas!

* Hearing the jukebox's Random function spin up Peter, Bjorn and John's seminal 'Young Folks', apropos of nothing, John looks up, spits out: 'I fucking HATE whistling' and returns quite merrily to planning his turn.

Wyckyd's GeekBuddies Top 10 Highest Rated Games I Haven't Rated - 2016

by Wyckyd

I came across a blogpost by bkunes, in which he looked at games rated highly by GeekBuddies, which he doesn't own. It seemed like a great way to discover some games, and he was kind enough to explain how to get that list, so here goes!

Note: Because I am interested in finding new games, I've selected games I haven't rated instead of selecting games I don't own.

10. Thurn & Taxis A title I've heard off, but don't know a lot about. But it seems like a decent euro, so I'd probably enjoy playing it. Don't know if I am going to seek it out though - the theme of German post doesn't really appeal to me.

9. Ingenious
I kinda remember having played this.. I think. Apparently it didn't leave a big impression. I mostly stay away from abstract games, so again not a game I will actively start looking for.

8. San Juan
This game has been a favourite of mine for some time now, but I've only played the iOS version. Will definitely pick this up if I come across it for a reasonable price.

7. Caylus
When I started to get into the board gaming hobby, I watched all the "board games with Scott" videos. And I remember Scott disliking Caylus, on aaccount of "Caylus Commandos". So to this day, I haven't played this classic game, which is probably something I should remedy.

6. Tikal
For the longest time, my main gaming group included several players very prone to analysis paralysis. And though I know little of Tikal, I know that with 10 action points to spend every turn, this can be an AP beast. So I stayed away for now. Is it worth it to give this one a try? My geek buddies seem to think so.

5. Suburbia
Though I would probably like the gameplay, it is hard for me to get excited about this game. The art reminds me too much of spreadsheets..

4. Ticket to Ride: Europe
Pretty sure I played this version of Ticket To Ride at some point, but don't remember it well enough to rate it. I still enjoy playing the USA version, and so it is hard to see the point of trying the Europe version.

3. Puerto Rico
I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I haven't played Puerto Rico. This is a classic that seems to be totally up my ally (although here "Puerto Rico Commandos" might also be a slight deterrent). I actually have a copy right now, on loan from a friend, so this could be a new years resolution.

2. Agricola
Another classic that because of the theme has hardly any appeal to me. But because it is such a highly rated game, I've bought the iOS app to learn the game years back. After finishing the tutorial, I still had no idea what to do during the game, and haven't tried it since.

1. Le Havre
An unexpected top of the list. A game where I fear that like Agricola the game just is a bit too convoluted for my tastes. But perhaps I am mistaken about this title? This exercise definitely puts this game back on my radar.

So, not a lot of new titles, but I will have to seek out some of these games and try them. Which ones would you recommend? Let me know in the comments.

This is correct. However, if you don't like this rule, play with an unlimited Marketplace. This was the original rule. They changed it after people found out that Marketplace is a must-use in solo game and, thus, a pretty dull "strategy". A limited Marketplace makes for a more interesting solo game experience.

Hi,
does this rule apply also to Town square special building in solo play?

Do official variants of any kind exist for this game? Obviously this game can be tweaked in so many different ways to create a totally new experience, and I wonder if Rosenberg or publishers have ever released official possibilities for this.

For example, I've read on various threads that there is a comment somewhere from Rosenberg on a released or intended-to-be-released variant on loan interest payments. However this is not in my manual for the Z-Man version and I can't find much about the actual comments online. Anyone know if these exist?
