Episode 42 — It’s Not Your Game, It’s Our Deficiency

What’s wrong with us?

In opposition to those poorly received games we like, our guilty pleasures, there must be games that are well-loved and critically acclaimed which elude our ability to enjoy. Right? Surely.

We spend the Lion’s share of this episode discussing games that, despite their acknowledged goodness, one of us is unable to like. It was a fun, maddening discussion, and we hope you’ll enjoy it, or at least tell us why we’re wrong. Because we are wrong. Very, Very wrong.

Thread: Le Havre:: General:: Effects of an early Dunny in a game?

I just acquired the 12 card promo pack in a trade an a rules question kind of came to mind. At this point its hypothetical, but I'm still curious....

Its possible for the hardware store, brickworks, and business office to appear on the same stack (or no hardware in a 2P game). The Dunny could appear as early as the fourth round of the game and end up covering both of these buildings. This would be a significant hinderance because the dunny requires brick and such a placement would block access to buildings you need to get said brick.

I'm mostly curious to know if this has ever happened to anyone and how the game played out. After checking the building reference, I did note that buying the Dunny is a possible action, so the game wouldn't completely blocked. It seems like this would be a major game changer if it were to happen. I don't think I would want to be the person who buys it off the stack because there is no point gain by doing so. Time spent acquiring the 14 dollars is time lost gathering more valuable resources. Other players would benefit by being able to build from other stacks while you were busy "stalling" by gathering money. I suppose, eventually, the city would also build it off, but this also means three rounds of stagnation.

A three player game of the long/standard version of the game will go for three hours most likely. At least at first. Once you're proficient at the game, I could see playing the standard game in 2.5 hours with three players. I played the short game with two other new players last week, and it took between 2-2.5 hours. One guy had some pretty bad AP, though.

Truthfully I don't even mind how long a game will take anymore as long as it's fun. I've played a lot of games since the time that I wrote that comment and playtime isn't an issue for us at all anymore ( as long as it's awesome).

HE SAID HE JUST BOUGHT THE GAME.

OP, if you're unfamiliar with the game, start with the short 2P game to get a feel for it, then jump into the long 3P game.

I've tried it twice.. first time the g/f fell asleep as I set up the game (it was late though) and the other time she just gave up on it because she said there was too much to think about and we didn't fully know the rules (she hates playing something without understanding it 110% if you know what I mean). Third's the charm though (I least I hope so.. lol) and if I had to get into Takenoko without knowing how to play it, she has an moral obligation to play my games too lol.

My discussion was around the base game only, and (sarcastically if you will) an OOP edition with extra bonus letters in some word (put there by my wife) is clearly worth more (to me)

Picked this up on Thursday without realising that it was in English version rather than Australian version... so no bonus letters for me :shake:

Considering pasting up my version just to make life easier on my gaming group.

That's New York English as Hanno mentioned, if it was English English those extra letters would have been there...

Yep, but they only say 'English version' on the back of it... I suppose the assumption being that because Z-Man are US that it's US English.

Unlike last month, this month we had plenty of space to play games. I think this time we had a few more people and we played a few more games than last time.

First game I played was 7 Wonders with Cities, Leaders, Wonder Pack, and Wil Wheaton promo card. I was not lucky enough to win this game (and it was the start of me not winning any 3+ player game that day). The next game that I played was a new game for me... Le Havre. I messed up royally in this game about halfway through and could not recover. I'll give this game another chance some time but right now my rating for the game is a 5/10. I'll see if my opinion can change on this but I don't know.

After seeing me lose Le Havre horribly (20+ points behind the 3rd place person who was about 10 points behind 1st place), my wife picked the game Power Grid to play. I usually do fairly well in this game and today wasn't any different. I was doing great until Step 3, I got cut off multiple times but I did end up tied for 3rd place in a six player game.

My next game was a quick game of Hive: Pocket. I was teaching it so naturally I won the game. I played this game while I waited for Mike to setup his unpublished prototype for a game he is making called Into Darkness. The game is an RPG based board game and it was ok. We ended up winning the 5 player co-op and I gave him so feedback. Hopefully he incorporates it into his next iteration.

After this, I played another new game... Village. Now this worker placement game I liked. I did come in last place but man was it fun and I wasn't too far behind 3rd and 2nd place. All of the losers though were at least 15 points behind 1st place but all of us were new to the game, so it was fair grounds. I want to play this again so I can try different tactics since I'm more familiar with the rules now. This game will be given a First Thoughts post while Le Havre will be given another try before a First (Last???) Thoughts.

All in all it was a great day for gaming. Almost 12 hours of board games throughout the day with some bathroom and food breaks.

A link to the total games played can be found here:

This is extremely unlikely. How unlikely? Without loss of generality, assume the hardware store is in column 1. Then you would need all of the following:

* Brickworks to be in column 1 (Probability 9/26 if playing a 3 player game)
* Business office to be in column 1 (Probability 8/25)
* Dunny to be, almost certainly, the first or second special building, as the Hardware store tends to be built pretty early (probability 2/12, assuming you're playing with just the Essen cards)
* Column 1 to have the highest numbered top card when Dunny comes out (probability 1/3)

9/26*8/25*2/12*1/3 = 2/325 ~= 0.6% chance

If it does happen, I'd argue you're stuck until someone buys the Dunny or the town builds it, with the latter being much more likely for the reasons you mentioned. 3 rounds without brick isn't the end of the world...it slows things down, but it's an equal handicap for everyone.

Quick note that the iOS implementation seems to handle this wrong. I sold Shipping Line in the last round and it kicked another player's disc but not mine. I ended up undoing my turn and using the Bridge while grumbling, nice to see my plan was valid even if the app disagreed.

I don't quite understand what you're saying. How can there be more than one disc on the Shipping Line? If you sell a building, the token on that building is removed. It is either your own token or another player's. In any case, the building is now free of tokens and you can enter it (regardless of there your token is).

[All the above is not true for the Dive Bar, but that is a special case in and of itself.]

Oh, you meant the final action? Seems to be a bug then.
