All parts belong to the same archive. Did you try to unrar them independently? Sounds like that. And no, your OS is fine.

ok...so i just bought Le Havre on the ipad, and i have no idea what i'm doing.

i went through the tutorial...twice. then, i played a normal game (short game, one opponent) using the hint button to give me some clues as what to do, but i dont think the game has "clicked" yet.

any pointers for someone new to the game?
i dont think ive played any other games like it.
you can check my collection to confirm.

i like the game, and i understand some things, but im totally lost on the majority.

any one have a "le havre for dummies" writeup?

Hi, I have the app, too. What exactly do you need? The app has awesome rules and FAQ sections. You might wanna check them out.

Cheers! :)

In general, don't trust the hint button. It doesn't give good advice most of the time (probably because it uses the AI engine, which is not very strong).

A pdf with the English rules is available at Lookout Spiele's (publisher of the board game) website: http://lookout-spiele.de/spiele/lehavre/. It's a bit down the page... wait, don't bother, here is a direct link: http://lookout-spiele.de/wp-content/uploads/LeHavre_Regeln_2...

If there are more particular questions, we're here to help you. ;)

Cheers,
Rainer

practice makes perfect...have tried the game once it is a brain burner all right...

my issue is that when I had to upgrade the app it stalled, and when the ipad was synched with the laptop the app went poof...thank goodness I had Puerto Rico HD too, which is an excellent port by the way...

You can build buidlings and you can ship goodies.. all while properly feeding yourself. If you find yourself not building, or not shipping, or spending a lot of turns taking small bundles of food that barely get you through a year.. you need more strategy.. :).

Also, unlike Agricola, loans are not death.

It's a complex game, and I'm not surprised you're finding it a bit impenetrable on an iPad. I have several tabletop games of LH under my belt, and I find it much harder to keep track of everything on the iPad than when it's all laid out in front of me.

Basically, the gist of the game is acquiring resources (including money), and turning them into more money. Or, more accurately, turning them into money plus buildings, since buildings are worth money at the end of the game. Along the way, you also have to worry about feeding your workers - the amount you need will increase as the game progresses.

Ways to get resources (including food) include:
- Taking an available offer
- Using a building that gives you resources.
- Using a building that converts basic resources to processed resources (e.g. wood to charcoal, or clay to bricks)
- Other players paying you food or money to use the buildings you've built

Other ways to get food include:
- Building ships

Ways to turn resources into money include:
- Building a building
- Building ships (although most ships are worth very little, some of the ones availably at the end of the game are worth a lot)
- Using a building that gives you money in return for something else. In particular:
(a) The Shippling Line allows you to use your ships to sell resources for money
(b) In the full-length version of the game, Special Buildings often give a big payout for specific combinations of resources

The key to the game is in deciding the best route(s) to getting that money, and doing it as efficiently as possible. Do you focus on building lots of buildings? Or do you concentrate on getting high-value goods that you'll then ship for money? Will you concentrate on getting cattle and charcoal, so that you can sell steaks at that Steakhouse for big money? And what do you do when your opponents are already using it, blocking you? Do you use those steaks to feed your workers, do you build ships to bring in regular food supplies, or will you just take loans to feed them, and plan to pay them off later with the money you're planning to make?

There are, of course, further complications, but that's about as succinct as I can make it.

Three big tips I can think of:

1) Take the time to keep checking which buildings have been built by the town and your opponents. Using buildings is absolutely key to doing well at the game, and it's not easy to see them all on the iPad.

2) Don't be too terrified of taking loans to feed your workers. This isn't Agricola - the penalties for not having enough food aren't necessarily going to lose you the game, and being able to spend actions on things other than getting food can outweigh those penalties if done right.

3) When in doubt, you can do a lot worse than gathering wood, clay and/or iron, especially if a pile has accumulated on an offer space, and then building buildings with it. It may not be the most spectacular way to get VP, but it's a perfectly good one.

Hope that helps!

In a 2 player game, in the beginning take any resource that piles up to 4 or more. Iron and cattle, you should already consider taking when there's 2 on offer (the cattle will start breeding right away). In the early game, highest priority should be on wood, clay, and mostly also fish to secure food supply for the first couple of rounds.

The marketplace is a nice building to use at an early point, especially when you've already built (or bought) one or more craftsman's building(s) (e.g. the Build 4), because it gives you different goods (consider getting an early grain that way, because from the first grain on, you'll get another one every round).

Try to have 5 wood and your starting coal in stock by the time someone builds the wharf. An early ship can save you lots of feeding problems later on, and gives you more freedom to collect building materials and build buildings.

Another hint would be to watch out for your opponent's food strategy and build the buildings he needs (so you can collect the entry fees from him): If he gets early cattle, try to build the abattoir before he does. If he builds or buys the fishery, go for the smokehouse. If he's into grain, grab the bakehouse. Or, the other way around, try to get the fishery, smokehouse, and as many buildings with the fisherman symbol as possible for yourself. That'll make for a nice food supply even when you don't have any ships.

Have fun exploring the game, I'd love to hear more about your progress! :)

You absolutely need to read through Ponton's Extensive Le Havre Buildings Reference and FAQ (at least for all the standard buildings).

Also, work towards building or buying ships and shipping goods. You should attempt to get at least two very high-value shipments in along with another couple lower value shipments by the end of the game.

I figured out the key to the AI playing the short game, and then applied that to the full game.
Just against the iOS, early on just work on building stuff so you can sell them off later for a wooden boat. Don't worry about loans early on if you can work towards this on your turn. You can usually pull of the boat buy in round 2. Perhaps repeat this a few times. I usually end up with 3 wooden boats, as the AI seems to take any other boat buying/building prospects away from me.
When you have built a boat, the computer will probably have lots of wood it would like to build into a boat, so delay the wharf if you can.
The AI ignores the power of the building that gives you 3 or 4 coal. Go there as much as you can, turn it into coke, and ship like crazy. (first ship for me, 1coke to power 3 ships, and ship the rest of the coke) If you are shipping for tons of money, buy unbuilt buildings. It's about a break even proposition for you,but the others can't increase the value of thier companies by building if there are none to build.

In the iOS version it doesn't let you take the francs offer as your final play?!? This a bug or a game rule?

One other the ships when you first build them appear a bit buggy visually. Will this be addressed in next update?

In the final action, you're not allowed to take any of the supply piles. (You're also not allowed to buy buildings.)

Sorry, Todd, but this isn't true. You are definitely allowed to take one of the offers. You do no re-fill the offers, though. Thus, only one player can take the Franc offer as his final action.
