The Mayfair edition had every expansion and promo ever made included. Why settle for less?

Thread: Le Havre:: General:: Custom insert - A radical approach

It always bothered me that there was no storage solution for the bajillion tiles in this game that I was happy with. I had the tuck boxes but they were too fiddly - the lids were a pain to put on and off and they crowded the board too much for my liking. I've seen many different solution here - little plastic containers in various shapes and sizes, but at the end of the day you still have to unload each box on to the board, remove all the lids etc etc.

Wouldn't it be nice to not have to do any of that when setting the game up? Wouldn't it be great if the tiles could be stored inside the board? And there's a ton of dead space in the box - it could hold a few really fat boards...

WARNING - Some players may find the following images a bit disturbing

The edition of Le Havre I have is the one with three separate boards, so I made an insert (20mm high) for each one:

The tiles sit in these compartments in the same arrangement as is marked on the boards:

You'll notice the building proposal board section in the above image surprise

And a little tray for all the cards:

Then I cut holes out of the boards where each of the goods are and glued each board on to the top of the the corresponding insert so that all the goods are stored sunken into the now 3D boards!

The compartment where it says 'Special Buildings' holds all the player tokens, supply tiles and first player disc. The special buildings cards sit astride this hole during play. Here's everything set up for a two player game:

After the game all you have to to is put the card tray and middle board in first, then place the building proposals board across the top to make it flush with the other board:

Then stack the other two boards one on top of the other - the three trays are almost flush with the top of the box:

Then it's all topped off with a few laminated player displays and the rulebook to stop the cattle and hide tiles from falling out of their little cubby holes (I store my games vertically):

I must admit it was a little scary doing this as once you set about a game board with a Stanley knife there's no going back - and this game is hard to get a hold of if everything went pear-shaped. But I think it turned out great! Setup and tear down are a breeze now - just slap the boards down and off you go. So if you're feeling brave give this a go! It worked for me.

Wow radical indeed! I might want to try this. Although I am wondering if it's possible to find a hi-res scan of the playboards to print out and work with? Anyways: good job!

What is the best version of Le Havre to get?

Any one you can get your hands on. Game play for all versions is the same. Later editions may come with more special cards and with some corrected errata.

I looked through the variants and did not see anything much proposed there for changes to short game. I'm thinking most don't bother with it, but I don't really know bit of an assumption hence this thread.

- I was thinking 10/11 turns would be nice, 8 seems a touch short.

- What about all these goods players start with in 2 player, works ok? Seems to make the start crazy easy in comparison?

- Seems a little odd to also omit special buildings?

Anything else you like/don't like about the short game?

Overall I am thinking something in between the short and regular would make a nice game, just seems the short went a touch too far in changes (for my liking)

Thanks for any thoughts

Also what about some of the buildings missing in the 2 player game, are they missed?

To me, the length of the short game is fine and there are so many buildings anyway, I dont really miss the ones you remove. I just think the difficulty ramp is a bit brutal.

I played my first ever game as the short version with 3 players and I would recommend against it. A lot of our turns were taken up by trying to have enough food at the end of the round, but that might be also be because we were all playing for the first time.
The short game ramps up too quickly and it is over before you can take advantage of any of your game engines. By the time I could use the Shipping Line, there was 1 turn left.
So it was a good intro game to get an idea of how the game plays, but I was left very dissatisfied.
If you are playing just 2-3 players I would just bite the bullet and play the normal length game. You will find it far more rewarding.

Hi played our first 2 player games last night. Found it odd that that the start of the game we dealt out 6 special buildings. However over the course of the games only 4 were revealed (wasting the final 2) did we miss a rule or is this supposed to happen?

In 2-player games, you only need 5 special buildings (one will not enter play but is needed for the Marketplace building effect).
