What I would say in response, after reading every else's posts and with my own experience as well, is keep your eye on this statement and no other.

Some of my most fun 2-p games have been buying up the town (and getting the Bank bonus) while my opponent buys more ships and outships me, and seeing who ekes out the win. Sometimes she wins, sometimes I do, and it is almost always close.

One of the best of these saw me losing 295-289. My opponent produced 10 steel (low to some of you experts, but impressive to me) and got both luxury liners AND the Church - and I still almost pulled off a win.

So I think the "wildly different ways" is still valid. But then I've played only about 30 times with other people (I love this thing solo) and perhaps I am still on the honeymoon.
