Where exactly from? As a strategic supplement, maybe, but not as main strategy. As others have alluded to, money is too difficult to come by to be spending on buildings. There are only five early game buildings worth thinking about buying:

I couldn't find a thread to support my memory. I read these Le Havre forums a couple of years ago when I got introduced to the game and just started to read these again now that I got my own copy of Le Havre. I have a vague memory of some threads that had posts indicating that buying buildings (before shipping stuff) is a standard play, but either I misunderstood those posts or these posts never really existed.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies. They show that our play group's playing style is pretty normal when we don't buy many buildings. Fishery/Sawmill/Charcoal Kiln seem to be the best buildings to build/sell to finance an early ship along with grabbing the franc offer, but apart from that, I think we are going to let the francs pile up (it's no better than food unless you get most of your feeding from ships or have gathered a pile of food by other means) and use Joinery only on a rare occasion.
