So I think it would be safe to say that they probably played it wrong. It is possible that they got it right, but there is a very specific path that you need to do to get to that point and you would still need for specific things to happen to achieve a higher score.

It is very possible we got some rules wrong... would love ti figure out what ones.
I made almost all my francs shipping coke(sp?) I had allot of buildings and was taking a huge amount of coal on the building that did that and then turning it into coke + money then shipping it all out. was shipping out around 70francs worth of coke every shipment and did that a few times. the first few times i purchaser ships so i could ship even more out the next times as it was allot easier for me to get francs then the resources to build ships. I ended the game with most of the buildings and all but 2 of the ships (none luxery). My opponent let me have all the wood in the first 2 rounds and he was never really ever able to get any buildings built or ships built as he was focused on food, i took loans the first 2 harvests and focused on resources and buildings.
