Um no, I think you might be playing incorrectly. The short solo game does show numbers 1-4. That means 4 rounds. Each round, you move your ship 7 times, taking actions, get to the end and pay food (first time, pay 10). You move your ship 7 times again for round #2, this time owing 20 food, and so on.
The original poster played the long solo game, which is 7 rounds. So that's 7 times he'll move his ship through the 7 spots, 49 actions total as shown above.
