Four Horsemen Board Gamers Anonymous Tabletop Day - 9/27/14

by William A.

Unlike last month, this month we had plenty of space to play games. I think this time we had a few more people and we played a few more games than last time.

First game I played was 7 Wonders with Cities, Leaders, Wonder Pack, and Wil Wheaton promo card. I was not lucky enough to win this game (and it was the start of me not winning any 3+ player game that day). The next game that I played was a new game for me... Le Havre. I messed up royally in this game about halfway through and could not recover. I'll give this game another chance some time but right now my rating for the game is a 5/10. I'll see if my opinion can change on this but I don't know.

After seeing me lose Le Havre horribly (20+ points behind the 3rd place person who was about 10 points behind 1st place), my wife picked the game Power Grid to play. I usually do fairly well in this game and today wasn't any different. I was doing great until Step 3, I got cut off multiple times but I did end up tied for 3rd place in a six player game.

My next game was a quick game of Hive: Pocket. I was teaching it so naturally I won the game. I played this game while I waited for Mike to setup his unpublished prototype for a game he is making called Into Darkness. The game is an RPG based board game and it was ok. We ended up winning the 5 player co-op and I gave him so feedback. Hopefully he incorporates it into his next iteration.

After this, I played another new game... Village. Now this worker placement game I liked. I did come in last place but man was it fun and I wasn't too far behind 3rd and 2nd place. All of the losers though were at least 15 points behind 1st place but all of us were new to the game, so it was fair grounds. I want to play this again so I can try different tactics since I'm more familiar with the rules now. This game will be given a First Thoughts post while Le Havre will be given another try before a First (Last???) Thoughts.

All in all it was a great day for gaming. Almost 12 hours of board games throughout the day with some bathroom and food breaks.
