You absolutely need to read through Ponton's Extensive Le Havre Buildings Reference and FAQ (at least for all the standard buildings).Also, work towards building or buying ships and shipping goods. You should attempt to get at least two very high-value shipments in along with another couple lower value shipments by the end of the game.
