No, the reverse. Buying a ship effectively loses you points - you buy it for say 16, but it's only worth 4. On the other hand when you build it, whatever the value is profit.
the advantage to buying it is to get earlier, and thus get extra food out of it, and maybe the Wharf is not yet in play.
