Hi Jon, thanks for the reply.

Right below your rules quote it says:

Buildings: At any time, all buildings that are owned by the town and the buildings on the top of the three Building Piles are available for purchase. In most cases, the purchase price is the building's value; if this is not the case, the purchase price is indicated separately (as 'Cost') beneath the value. A player may buy more than one building from the same pile in sequence.

I read in another thread (can't recall now, I've read so much) the 'same building pile' restriction, but now see that interpretation my be incorrect.

So building buys are any town or top card in a pile (and that top card may change if a player just purchased a building in that same pile), if I now have that correct?

Correct!

Also, and this is more of a stunt, but shows how the rules work, if you are on the Construction Firm (that allows you to build one or two buildings) you can use that to build one building, then buy the next building (or more!), then build (finishing the use of the Construction Firm) the building after that.

I get the login window, but after clicking join the settings window never opens

Make sure you have the file structure correct and created the 2 missing files. I can't think of any other reason right now.

I'm sorry, I skimmed the forums and did not see an obvious answer and I did not find the rules clear on buildings. Forgive me, this is my very first play-though of Le Havre.

When you build a building in a construction firm. Other than paying the construction firm the entry fee and supplying the building requirements (e.g. Wood & Clay) you don't pay anything else unless specifically listed right. For example, all I pay for the Fishery is the wood and clay. Am I right?

It says "The player receives 3 fish from the supply. In addition, she receives 1 additional fish for each Fisherman that is shown on her building cards." Is this a one time thing? Let's assume that I have no other fishermen other than on the Fishery. Do I get 4 fish each turn, or only once?

Thanks in advance. I also looked in the files section for any noob rule interpretations but I didn't see anything.

Yes, when you use the Construction Firm, you pay only the resource cost to build the building(s). The cost (in Francs) is only an option after the town has built a building and you wish to buy it.

As for your second question, you only get that benefit when you place your disc on the building in question (Fishery, in your case). The owner is irrelevant, other than perhaps earning an entry fee. The benefit is not earned every turn. In fact, if you leave your disc on there next turn (i.e. you take resources from an offer space instead), then you do not get the fish again. You must move your disc to another building and then move it back to the Fishery in a later turn.

Yes, the only things you pay are the entry fee (two food in this case, which goes to the owner of the construction firm) and the materials needed for construction.

It says "The player receives 3 fish from the supply. In addition, she receives 1 additional fish for each Fisherman that is shown on her building cards." Is this a one time thing? Let's assume that I have no other fishermen other than on the Fishery. Do I get 4 fish each turn, or only once?

The text referred to here describes the action available for players to take at the fishery.

So, in the same way that moving your token onto the construction firm allows you to build one or two buildings, moving your token onto the fishery lets you take three fish plus one for every fisherman symbol in your possession.

When a player takes an action, their token stays on that card until they choose to move it somewhere else on a later action. Only one player token can be on a card at a time.

Thanks both of you. That makes perfect sense. This is probably the most complex game that I have played since starting the hobby. The family likes gateway games. I liked the sound on this one and it can be played solo.

I'll try not to clog the forums up with too many noob questions.

Thanks again

Attention: You don't have to wait for the town to build a building in order to buy it. You can buy any building that is available for construction (i.e. is on top of one of the three building stacks) right away.

(Pay attention to the difference between building (which is a main action and involves using one of the construction buildings and paying resources) and buying (which is not a main action but can be done in addition to your main action and involves paying money).)

If you have an iOS device, you could try the app -- it's actually very well done, and probably a good way to play around with the buildings and rules. It works on the iPhone, but for a newbie an iPad would be much better.

Le Havre was my first "heavy" game. It's a slippery slope :)

Hm, did you enter an IP adress when logging in? Don't and see what happens. For local play there is no need for one, or use 127.0.0.1.

If you run the game via console "java -jar JLeHavre.jar", what is the console output, if any?

For a one player game, what is the difference between these two cards? I know that "start" means to put up next to the starting buildings, but what does the checkmark vs. no checkmark tell me?

The larger solid check is for the long game.

The smaller outline check (or the word start) is for the short game.

"Start" cards are only found in the short game.

So the first card is available in the long game, and is a start card in the short game.
The second card is not available at all in the long game, but is a start card in the short game.
