Thread: Le Havre:: Rules:: Rules I have been playing wrong?

Recently, I bought and played the iPad version of the game and came across 3 things I have been doing wrong in the board game (unless the app if wrong which I doubt) .

So I am looking for clarification and if possible where in the rules this is covered as I just retread them and couldn't find these stated.

1 . In the iPad game the worker stays on whatever building it last used until it is used again. I had been taking it off on the next turn so to clear up the building use for others.

2. Buildings can't be used back to back ( the rule book does say this for the final turn but I didn't see it anywhere else)

3. The final action comes after the last feeding.

Thanks in advance!

All three of these are correct.

Only way a building can be used back to back is if you buy it from the town or sell it to the town so the worker gets removed and sent back to the player. Once with the player it can go to the building even if it is on the same player turn.

Nothing like sitting in a building you own to block other players from using it

Or sitting in your opponent's building so they can't use it -- Bwa-ha-ha!

1. correct, and this is a key part of the game

2. can be bypassed by selling or buying, i.e. if you are in a building you own, sell it at the start of your next turn and use it again, or if its in the town, buy it at the start of your turn and you can use it again

3. yes, the final action is there

They can always sell it and use it anyway (though of course they are taking a 50% of the building value hit)...

Sometimes incredibly worth it and a valid reason to buy or build the building in the first place.

In skimming the rules, I have to admit to the OP that these interpretations (which I believe are definitely correct) are not very clearly indicated. Two of them you kind of have to understand by inference.

The clearest one is the no re-use of a building. It's in the margins on page 5, opposite the building action explanation. It says that:

A player may not re-use a building that already contains his Person disc.

So from that you know that you can't re-use the building. You can also infer that you're supposed to leave your disc there because otherwise how could it still contain his disc? You can also infer it from the buying and selling buildings rule (page 6) which tells you to return any occupying person discs after these actions. You wouldn't have to return them unless they were supposed to stay there until the next use.

The final action after the final feeding rule is contained within the Final Stage rule on page 9. It says the last round card is resolved and then the final stage begins. If you look at End of a Round on page 7, it describes how to resolve a round card, which includes the feeding phase.

It's all there, but perhaps not as explicitly as it could be.

Thanks for the clarification and to shmello50 for the rule book look at. Always nice to know after playing a game for awhile and think you know what's going on to find out that's not the case.

Seeing as there's nothing in the rules that tells you to remove your disc after using a building, I wonder how people keep dreaming up that rule.

(If you were supposed to remove your disc immediately after using a building, the discs are completely pointless anyway.)

I'm interested to see what you think of the game playing this way. I have a feeling it will be very different for you.

When the rule book doesn't explicitly say to leave it the interpretation is left open. For me I assumed if the worker wasn't used to go to the building he was thematically picking up the items from the offer. We would leave the worker on the building the whole round thus, he still blocked the building's use, but on the next turn I would put him on a new building or to my buttery if I took from the offer.

Me as well. It will make certain building more clogged up and strategy more flexible. I will have to try to pull it out again today to see.

Okay, so what other things do you do that the rulebook doesn't tell you not to do?

A key buildings for blocking is often the first wharf, especially if one comes out a while before the second. An interesting aspect is that if you build (not buy) a wharf everyone else will get the opportunity to use it first

Summoner Wars Expansion Coming
The guys at Playdek have just announced that two new armies will be available for Summoner Wars via IAP this coming Monday, August 5. The two new armies are the Benders, a group of magicians who practice mind-control magic, and the Mountain Vargath, an army of goatmen. Also coming will be an update that adds a "Lore" menu which provides strategy and background information as well as a new AI opponent. The price for the expansion is $2.99USD. Summoner Wars is currently available for iOS Universal. It is FREE (but that's changing Monday as well...it will be $0.99USD starting then) and can be found on the App Store.

Cafe International on Sale
We also heard from Application Systems Heidelberg, who have put their port of Café International on sale to celebrate its 1-year anniversary. Haven't tried it yet? Now's your chance as you can pick it up for only $0.99USD. It's a fun game, and they've done a great job with it, so you can't go wrong for a buck. Cafe International is for iOS Universal and is available on the App Store.

Codito Games Still on Sale
Just a reminder that ALL Codito Development games are currently on sale to celebrate the release of A Brief History of the World last week. The sale only lasts through tomorrow (I think), so grab these now if you don't already have them (link to App Store buried in price):

Reiner Knizia's Tigris and Euphrates: $0.99USD
Reiner Knizia's Ra: $0.99USD
Tikal: $0.99USD
Le Havre (The Harbor): $0.99USD
A Brief History of the World: $2.99USD
Medici HD (iPad Only): $0.99USD
Medici (iPhone): $1.99USD

Seriously?! Mixes Digital and Physical
Seriously?! is a Kickstarter that, with 9 days to go, looks unlikely to meet it's funding goal. It's about $95,000 short with only 9 days to go. That said, it has an interesting concept of a physical trivia game that uses a smartphone (iOS or Android) as the moderator and physical cards that are read by your phone's camera. Ok, so it's not earth-shattering, but I would imagine this unholy union of digital and physical to keep popping up in game design as smartphones become more and more ubiquitous. Anyway, if you want to find out more you can check out their Kickstarter.

A local online retailer is showing it coming back in stock in a week. I'm not sure if this means it was reprinted or just resupplied.

I'm hoping it means the former. It hasn't been available online for anything close to MSRP for quite a while.
