Session: Le Havre:: iOS Le Havre scores - am I really that bad?

Hey all.
Have been enjoying Le Havre on iOS tremendously since it came out. That's such a huge benefit of iOS - as a gamer geek that sadly doesn't have a game group to play live with (or the time to do it), getting a chance to play games like this that I've been dying to play is such a treat. Look forward to more for that reason. These days I'm either playing games that actually hold up solo (like Mage Knight - are there any other solo games that hold up? Is Le Havre actually fun solo? Can you play on iOS solo? Haven't tried that yet), or I'm feverishly download iOS board game apps.

That said, I've played 20-25 or so iOS Le Havre so far, and while I'm consistently winning the 2 and 3 games (long version) even on the hardest AI levels, my scores are still typically only in the mid 100's. [My favorite win was me: 123, AI negative 23]. When I look at the geek forums for what to expect for a 'good score', I should be well over 200, even into the 300's. Am I missing something? I haven't seen the AI get anywhere near that either - best AI score I've seen is 200. Is that normal? Have other people seen average/good scores much higher than that for 2 or 3 player games?

Am I that bad? Couple of things I've noticed so far:
- While some forums suggest that the less players, the higher the scores, I've seen that the 3 player games open up more points potential than the 2 player games because of the buildings offered.
- The short version of the game has less points potential than the longer version. Any ideas what a 'good score' would be for short games?
- I'm assuming one of the things I'm doing 'wrong' is I need to be shipping mo' coke! Seems like that's the big secret on upping scores, and I admittedly haven't been doing that enough.

Any other strategy ideas? I'm sure I'll see my scores rise as I continue to get better, but so far it's been slow going.

A big part of it is only getting resources when you need them or can't let the other players get them. If you spend an action taking 1 iron or 1 cow you're doing it wrong.

I haven't played the iOS version, but if it's the same as the analog version, then a winning score in a two-player game should consistently be over 300 and a winning score in a 3-player game should consistently be over 250/

I guess that's my question then - why do my iOS scores seem to be much lower? Is it just me, and the AI I'm playing against (even on the hardest setting?) Or is there game mechanic difference between the two?

Well, what strategies are you adopting? You should try a mix of different approaches - different types of building; focus on ships; focus on shipping; etc.

I am a terrible Le Havre player but I can tell you that, win or lose, my scores are a lot higher if I have a sense of where I want to end up.

Same game. The best AI is not good though, so it's fairly easy to win without being optimum.

Don't be afraid to take loans! Loans are your friend. It can even be good to get into a postion where you have to take a loan in order to get a few francs of spending money out of the deal. Just be sure you don't get surprised by interest.

The only full play through I had with the AI during testing (all the other games I played were heavily focused on testing for bugs) was like 300+ vs hardest AI 50. So, it is possible.

Can you score that well at will, even if your opponent is playing poorly? In some sense, doesn't good play in Le Havre by one player make it possible for his/her opponent to also score high?

Yes, very easy. One of the reasons the BGG rating is too high imo.

I've read this multiple times and I still don't understand it.

Obviously games should only be rated high if they provide a challenge to cheaters as well.

From my limited experience, I would say that's true. When everyone is playing well, the buildings are built more quickly, so you are more likely to have access to any particular one when it would be most helpful to you.

To the OP, I would suggest trying to acquire buildings with some synergies. For example, last game I was able to get my hands on the Colliery, Cokery, and Steel Mill, so I won by gobbling up all the Steel ships. I've never come close to breaking 300 pts, though, so I'm probably not the best coach.

Not sure. It might depend on just how poor the opposition is. The only times I've seen over 300 in a 3-player game were in cases where one experienced player was playing two relatively new players. Average scores were still in the 250 range as usual, but skewed heavily toward the winner.

After 40-50 games, I think I'm finally showing improvement. I was able to get a score in the high 280's last night - FINALLY! And even then I made a couple mistakes (planned for another shipment in the last round only to have no energy left to do it - DOH!). Seems like the key (and what I was doing wrong), was not racing to get ships EARLY. By getting ships early, it neutralizes all the turns I was taking for feeding, which then allowed for more shipment options.

One thing though - I've seen other post that they were able to get their first ship as early as turn 2 - they must mean ROUND 2, right? Last night I made buildings early, sold them and got a ship in round 2, but turn 2 can't be right - don't believe the wooden ship even comes out until the second turn. But anywho - I was starting to get frustrated since I couldn't break 200 for the life of me, but it seems like the strategy of getting ships early and getting many of them is the way to go.

Thanks all! Loving this game! Now my only problem is that buying these board games on iOS was supposed to prevent me from wanting to buy the $50-$60 cardboard version. But I'm enjoying this game so much now I want BOTH! UGH!

That was probably me, since I refer to actions and turns, not turns and rounds.

Yes, to clarify, round 2.

There is only one "english" edition. It was called the "Autralian Edition" as a nod to Melissa who has translated all these games from Uwe for Lookout. So if you get the Aussie Ed here in the States, it is the "right one."

Sorry, i didn't see the title of your thread and was trying to figure out what you were saying from just the post.

On the main page, under the picture of the game, click the "View All" in the advertising box with an orange outline. It will take yo to this page:

http://boardgamegeek.com/geekads/viewall/thing/35677

It shows you the online retailers that have purchased advertisement on BGG and have the game for sale. Quite a few of them have it.

You can also go to BoardGamePrices.com and type it in.

Again, these are all American sites and they sell only English language games (unless specifically noted). So if you buy from any of them, it will be the Aussie Edition.
