Thread: Le Havre:: Rules:: Rules Changes from the Australian 2009 Edition

I have a thread going on the iOS version of Le Havre where I was trying to understand if an implementation of it was intentionally different than the boardgame or not.

In my version, I can sell a building at any time in the game, except during another players action. Also, in my version, there is no requirement for a reshuffle of the buildings if the clay mound or black market are on top.

I also recall the discussion regarding the interest on loans being scaled up a bit from my version, I don't use that one but I do recall it being implemented on the "official" version, I think it's the German one, printed after a certain date.

Did the rules change regarding selling restrictions ? Is the reshuffle requirement in the rules now ?

It's a good strategy you outline, however the buildings you mention rarely go to one person in any of our games, everyone is trying to obtain them. They usually get spread around amongst the players.

I've found that grain and cattle can make good sense in a 5 player game because of the lower food bills and the increased number of turns, or at least it seems that way.

The only rule changes I thought were in the IOS edition were me misremembering the rules

The new editions added some expert rules (optional) that are what you mentioned:

1. optional rule: pay 2 francs interest if your number of loans is >= number of players

2. optional rule: only sell stuff on your own turn or when the game wants you to pay something, but you're short on money

It takes a few plays to get used to how the buildings interact before you can start on the nuances of strategy.

This is what I failed to understand over the first 3 plays. I traded away the game because the most of the games went like this: (Get fish go to the smoke house. Get cattle, go to the abottoir. Get frustrated because you can barely buy wooden ships. Conclude the game is broken because who can ever do the thing necessary to make steel to make a steel ship let a lone a luxury liner).

This problem is only compounded when your only experience with Le Havre is 5p games. You might as well be a blindfolded monkey throwing darts from 500m.

This is not true. Even on only my second play I realized that food was fairly important so you will want a food mechanic or ships very early. In a larger game the player whos fifth may have to take a loan the first or second turn to maximize his points and prevent from falling behind.

The game is very well balanced as it scales.

In another thread (that wasn't really about this topic), it was stated that the rules say you should reshuffle the building proposal stacks if either the Clay Mound or Black Market is on top (presumably just during set-up).

However, I can't seem to find this in the rules. Am I blind? Is this a rule?

Thread: Le Havre:: General:: Shuffling expansion cards

This may seem silly, but I'll ask anyway...

I picked up the le grand hameau expansion buildings, but it seems that they don't shuffle easily into the special buildings pile due to them bending the opposite way. This causes the expansion cards to sort together during shuffling because they fit together better than they do with the original cards. Has anyone else experienced this problem and come up with a solution?

Thanks
MJR

No, I don't have that problem.

But sleeving them (with premium sleeves) might help.

Actually you can ignore food and spend your time accumulating goods, building buildings and shipping stuff.

Take loans whenever you need to feed then use the riches you have accumulated by not spending time feeding to pay off all those loans at the end of the game.

Not tried that evolution yet?!

I added that recommendation about the Clay Mound myself. It's based on experience: if the Clay Mound is on top of the stack, it's a no-brainer to buy as your first move. It's not as devastating as the Black Market which may give the starting player 2 iron, 2 grain, and 2 cows, though.

Sleeving takes care of the problem for me.

I agree with David. This is one of the strategies [taking loans to feed your crew] that did not even occur to me the first few plays. It is a useful strategy to utilize in the early stages of the game (rounds 1-3 or 1-4), as long as you are able to develop a reliable means of generating food in the middle stages of the game (i.e. building ships or converting cattle into meat via the Abbottier (spelling??)) Le Havre is rich and deep with strategy. I wish I knew more people that liked playing it.

I bought Le Havre 2 years ago, played it a few times, and never since then.

I was thinking about trading it or giving it away, but I still believe the mechanics are really interesting. The problem I have with it, is that when playing other games, like Agricola for example, you can relate to the theme and have the urgency to work the land and feed your family (and for that matter make your farm look nicer). However with Le Havre, it feels more like some weird work, just feeding a well oiled machine so you can get your precious VPs and win in the end.

The questions (problems) I have with LeHavre are these:

Who are you in Le Havre?

Probably I'm a member of the port community and I'm trying to run some businesses, but I can't relate.

Where is this people I have to feed?

They keep growing in numbers but I have never hired anyone, am I in a socialist community?

Why do ships help me feeding people?

I guess it is because I can get food from new routes, but without someone actually buying the food, the ship would be useless, don't you think?

How long does my turn last in Le Havre?

It is not stated in Agricola, but I always imagine to be one day, so everybody goes to work (fight for resources), and come back at night. This is not an issue per se, but why then, in Le Havre, you could block a building that many turns (won't your worker ever sleep) if not just for the mechanics to work.

Why can't I just kick anyone out of one of my own buildings?

I would do it in real life, and though I know is for the mechanics to work, seems artificial.

I still want to play the game for the mechanics only, but the mechanics+theme combo, in my opinion, failed, and for that reason less people seem to be interested in playing it. I still want to give it a chance.

I believe all of the Special Buildings have the same wording, and obviously the town can build those. I think that the "cannot be built" box is intended to be more of an explanation of why there are no building materials listed on the card, rather than a rule of how it can be constructed.
So in order to construct it do you need to visit a building firm? Or do you just perform a buy action and take it?

Just buy it. Do not visit a building firm.

Thread: Le Havre:: Rules:: Interest for Loan cards and Feeding phase

Very rarely matter, but sometimes may...

In what order players pay interest? And what is the order of players during the feeding phase?

Thanks.

Sorry, I can't imagine a situation in which order of interest payment makes any difference. Any order that makes certain everybody who owes actually pays should be fine.
