You are talking about 7 steps per round, but that's not how it should be played! If you play the single player version, you only have 4 steps per round, as noted on the cardboard...

By the way, how do you people manage to score so many points? I can't even score higher then -10 or something...

Um no, I think you might be playing incorrectly. The short solo game does show numbers 1-4. That means 4 rounds. Each round, you move your ship 7 times, taking actions, get to the end and pay food (first time, pay 10). You move your ship 7 times again for round #2, this time owing 20 food, and so on.

The original poster played the long solo game, which is 7 rounds. So that's 7 times he'll move his ship through the 7 spots, 49 actions total as shown above.

Oh, and welcome to BGG.

Yes, i do understand... But on the board itself are words written like "START: Short version: 1". It is written under "Iron, Grain and Cattle". What does that mean? That means that you can move your boat 3 times per round...

I find it fairly difficult to score under 200 once you understand the basics of the game. No clue what my score was the first time I played Le Havre, but you should always be aiming for 200 to 250 on average. Although if the enemy is fairly weak and let's you get away with stuff you can probably get up to 300.

Also, Le Havre is pretty much a 3 player game only. I've played it twice with 4 and once with 5 and they all were extremely flat. You might be able to score higher in 4 with some of the big scoring buildings, but I tried to block out those games from my memory since they were so painful.

Wow, now I am really frustrated!

Just to see how this works, I pulled out Le Havre and did some calculations. In a 3P game there are 308 points for buildings, 120 for ships, and 102 for Luxury Liners, a total of 530.

The total shipping capacity in the game is 43. If each ship is used three times, and if the average good shipped is three francs (coke and steel balanced by the odd hides or brick), then there is 43x3x3 in shipping points, or 387. Add that to the 530 for buildings and ships and you get 917.

With bank and town hall bonuses, and special building effects, you might push the total possible to about 1000. That's about the maximum. So scoring about 330 in a 3P game is pretty much a sure victory.

That's just theory, of course. But if 1000 is the maximum, then 750 would represent a good group score, at which point 250+ probably wins you the game.

I'd like to see this theory backed up by some experiential reports.

Yes a player can do this, it also makes sense when computing building bonus via the bank at the end of the game.

That's been my experience as well, going there eats an action and in 3+ players games you simply don't get enough actions in a round to make up for it. You forgive two and then end up taking 3 more to cover the food bill. At best you tread water.

The one time it does make sense to me is the end of game, can't do anything else, move.

Thread: Le Havre:: Rules:: Dive Bar and Tobacco Factory

I tried searching for an answer to this but came up empty.

If I own both the Tobacco Factory and the Dive Bar, can I cause someone to take an infinite number of loans on my turn? Tobacco Factory allows me to eject players from buildings I own (and doesn't state that it's limited to once per turn), then they would end up in my Dive Bar and pay 2 francs.

Rinse and repeat ad ininitum?

I'm sure this has been discovered and errata'd but I can't find where.

Thanks!

You can check the Le Havre building FAQ, but since this is clearly broken it seems reasonable to assume you can't do it :)

I don't know if it is stated in the rulebook, but usually when someone's worker is ejected from a building, they are just given back to the player, not placed in another building.

Dive bar causes tokens that are "sent home" to instead go to the dive bar. In this case, the worker is not given back to the player.

These are expansion buildings, I suppose I should've posted this question over there. I figured I'd get more more views if I posted in the base game forum though (seems that there's far more traffic here).

I think this is an unreasonable interpretation of the building. When you use the Courthouse with six loans, you don't get to discard two loans and then apply the affect of the building again to discard another two loans. Unless there is an arrow on the card without a number above it (i.e. Charcoal Kiln) all actions are limited.

You've, in fact, discovered some sort of loophole.

New rule: The Tobacco Factory may only be used once per building per turn.

Please keep in mind that these buildings are promo buildings, so not necessarily checked for all interactions with other buildings, even among each other. I bet they haven't been play tested as many times as regular base game or expansion buildings.

When using a Wooden ship (for example) it says "Sells two goods using the shipping line" do you only sell two units of goods so for example 1 piece of coke and one piece hide OR can you sell all the coke you have and all the hide you have?

So single units of goods or categories of goods?

Based on your example, just 1 piece of coke and 1 piece of hide.

Excellent thank you! You settled a mid-game debate. :)

True, I suspect these cards were some leftover ideas that Uwe had during the testing phase of the game and that didn't make the cut for one reason or another.

Ponton, is there an official FAQ / Errata for this game? I've found a couple of threads that have bits and pieces but nothing that is comprehensive.

I only just got this game and I've been really enjoying it so far. I read through your entire card list / FAQ and noticed this potentially abusive combination so I thought I'd ask :)

Now, to order a set of cards and terrorize my gaming buddies with this once before we house rule it out

The FAQ I've created is effectively official. It had been approved by Uwe and covers most rules questions I've seen on the Geek. Only the stuff at the bottom of each entry is my personal thoughts.

I'll add the new ruling about the Tobacco Factory / Dive bar interaction when I'm back home (and don't forget it).
