I'm still wondering how Grain replicates at the Harbor as well as the cattle. As far as thematics goes, this game makes no sense. Tried playing this on the IPAD and it's really nothing more than an exercise in optimization.

In a building, on a harbor, with ships? Really? Not buying it.

Wait, you're not adding extra grain and cattle to the OFFER spaces at harvest time, are you?

It makes perfect sense to me that the grain in your supply would increase. One would assume that you have it planted in a field until you actually do something with it.

Of course the mechanics for this are abstracted to a high degree, but they're not suggesting that grain sitting for sale at the harbor is reproducing.

I guess with playing Agricola before this I just expected a bit more theme from Mr. Rosenberg.

If you play Agricola for the theme, you are going to lose BIG from the guy who plays it for optimization.

Just got the game in the mail and going through the rules.

I've noticed for buildings and ships the rules refer to building or buying them.

I can only assume you always have the build something first (in which case you know own it) and the only way someone can buy one of these things is if it has already been built and is now owned by the town (in which case someone must have sold it to the town at some point?)

Also can the starter buildings be purchased by a player? If so, is that a common thing people do?

Thanks for any help. I may have more questions in a bit.

Yes, the starting buildings can be bought. Indeed, the top buildings of the three stacks can also be bought if one does not have the resources to build them.

Ok so building and buying both give you ownership of the ship or building? Buying = building it.

Is building it preferred (as in its usually cheaper to do this?)

Sorry if I misinterpreted your response.

Thank you!

Usually, the reason I would buy a building that is already built would be if I expect to use it a lot and don't want to keep paying the cost, if I am collecting a certain type of symbol/type (fishing & the like), or if I expect others to use it and want the income. Sometimes it can even be worth buying a building that doesn't have an entry cost, in order to get a certain symbol. Sometimes, you also might want to buy the top of one of the three "unbuilt building stacks" as the previous poster said. Often, that will be to get it out of the way so that you can build the next thing under it. Or, it could be that you just really want to own that building.

Le Havre is a great game -- have fun!

Darin (above) covered the basic points on why one would want to buy instead of build buildings.

Try out the game the few times and what Darin said will make sense quickly.

Without going into any strategic details, just rules-wise there is a difference between buying and building. Building is a main action as it is done via certain buildings (B1, B2, B3, [02], or [12], [17]), so it consumes your entire turn. But you gain a number of victory points (the building value). Buying is an extra action that you can take on top of your turn, prior to or after your main action. In this case, you end up with no victory point gain (you may even lose some, like buying a ship loses points). But you didn't lose a turn to get what you want.
