Thread: Le Havre:: General:: iOS AI strength

Is Amiral Sabine the toughest AI player? Even though I don't consider myself a strong Le Havre player it seems that the AI is extremely weak. Being able to win easily without paying attention to what the other players are doing doesn't seem right.

But enough about that, how's Le Havre?

Okay, I bought it and should be able to find out myself, but just trying to get back on track :)

There are four levels of AI. The name does not matter. I found that I am too experienced for this AI and I beat it 6:1, but that doesn't matter. In a complex game like this I do not expect the AI to be uber-professional. Look at chess. It took them many, many years to design an AI that could beat the best human player on earth. And chess is "only" pattern recognition. I think Le Havre is even more complex regarding the decision tree (although I'm absolutely no authority to judge that - I have no idea, in fact). So, unless someone spends many years to focus on an AI for this game, any AI will be "bad" if you will.

Anyway, I still think they did a great job with the AI as is. I did pay attention and found it did some clever moves at times. It's more of a challenge for new players than for veterans.

This is what I'm talking about! I like how the art and icons are the same as in the boardgame. Makes it so much easier to play from the beginning. I can't stand playing the IOS of Caylus because of this difference (and having to scroll around to get everything in view.

For anyone wondering, this is a great app. Played two games last night (one short, one normal), and while I beat the AI comfortably, it went very smooth with no glitches. edit: I now realize that you can adjust the difficulty of the AI, so I must've been playing at the easy level--good to know. I skipped the tutorial entirely. I love how the Question Mark icon will explain in detail what the building/ship does.

I think Sage makes the best IOS boardgame implementations by far. (I am in no way affiliated or connected to them, btw.)

Thread: Le Havre (The Harbor):: General:: iOS Game - How does the online play work?

This is the first game I've tried to play online through the "Game Center" and I have a couple questions that I thought folks here might be able to help with. Is it only possible to play with "friends?" Can I not start a game and let anyone join? I suspect not, because I don't see anywhere that has open games looking for more players that I can join. There is absolutely nothing in the in-game help about how to play online, so I am hoping someone here has more insight than I do.

And a follow-up question: Anyone out there want to become Game Center friends and play a game?

I will be your friend! I just sent a friend request to both of you. Let's see what happens.

I'd certainly be up for it! I apologize I'll suffer from the same lack of GameCenter experience - not to mention my Le Havre skills... :D

Be careful that you always hit the right button in the Tutorial.

I was in the fourth round and the game wanted me to use the Abattoir. I selected the four cows it wanted, but accidentally hit the red X to cancel. This put the tutorial in an inconsistent state -- if I try to use it again, it says I'm not supposed to use it now, but I'm also unable end the current turn.

I had to quit the tutorial.

Yeah, the AI is pretty poor. Just won on hardest setting 251-85-75, and I'm not exactly an expert player. Hopefully they can improve it in further updates (and I hope they can add an option of the modified-loan rule, whereby loans cost 2/round to maintain over a certain point).

Regardless, it is a fantastic interface and a lot of fun. Can't wait to try vs real people.

I use containers that connect top to bottom. With 6 cm diameter, the cups are small enough to be placed next to each other on the supply fields and when connected fit perfectly into the Le Havre box.

fit perfectly lying down?

How many stack in one unit?

Yes, they fit perfectly lying down. They come in units of 5 or six, but you can stack as many as you want.

I'm assuming the scores mentioned here are for the long game? Is it correct to assume the short game scores would be lower? What's a 'good' score for a 2 player short game for instance?

Hi everyone:

I sent an e-mail to Lookout Games customer service (in English, rather unfortunately) with a request for replacement parts in early May and I have yet to hear from them as of last week, which is now 5 weeks and counting.

Is there some sort of issue on Lookout Games' end?

Thanks again!

We did not receive any eMail from you. Maybe it was caught in some SPAM filter. To which address did you send it?

Thanks

Hanno

We tried another variant on this theme tonight. The construction site was placed as startingbuilding and every player got 3 specialbuilding cards from the beginning. The limitation was that everyone was allowed to build only one of the cards they got in hand. So all players were just once allowed to use the construction site.
To get more control on the outcoming of the regular special buildings we upgraded the marketplace so that the users were allowed to check and replace the 3 upmost cards.
So in total there were 7 special buildings in this game with scores of 255, 257 and 334. But were just average players.
