March 2017: What is the significance of the Franc value on the bottom right corner of a standard good?
August 2016: Little "F"'s on tiles
November 2015: What does F. value mean on resource tiles?
February 2014: 'x' F. on an resource token
June 2010: Resource chits - simple question
November 2009: Dumb Question - What the F...?
October 2008: I feel silly, but what are the "F"s?

I think that the game was out of print (at least in North America) from late 2010 through late 2013, and that explains the gap of a few years during which no one asked this question.

Thread: Le Havre:: Rules:: How to accumulate multiple loans..?

Hi,

I see many strategy posts that suggest it could be worth it to accumulate multiple loans... even 5-7+ loans.

Given that you can only take a loan if you MUST take one, which means that you have zero food but also zero francs... it seems almost a challenge to PLAN to make sure you are out of food and franc by the end of each round.

Am I missing on an alternative way to get multiple loans?

IIRC, over the course of a two-player game you pay like 170 food. That's a lot of food. If you ignore feeding your worker for a couple of rounds, you'd quickly end up with quite a few loans. The key is to spend your money when you have it to not throw it away on feeding.

Dont forget that you also have to pay the 1 franc interest on the loan(s). So if you spend the francs from the loan, by say feeding at the end of the round, you may (fairly easily I find) have no francs to pay interest.

This ends up giving you a nice boost in Francs for a turn (at the expense of another loan). But you still only pay the 1 Franc interest no matter how many loans you have.

I often have 5 or so near the end when I pay them all off after a good shipping line use.

I suggest to play with the official variant in which loans are more expensive.
Its more challenging. And fish become more valuable.

Thanks for the replies. I'm actually playing it with 4 players (of course using official rules) and although it is possible to run out of money and food... I was able to manage without loans.

I'll see at tonight's game which strategy other players use.

Getting resources to feed can take up a lot of your time. Ignoring feeding and just taking loans frees up your actions to collect resources and build buildings for points (and more efficient food production).

Hia Everyone!

Ron was away all week!!! How am I supposed to get MAX gaming in? It was alright, I caught up on other game related stuff and worked on some videos etc.

I did manage to post my New to me list so you should look at that if you missed it!
Steph's New to Me List: June 2017!

Here is me! I have been braiding my hair a lot recently since it's pretty!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Monday night I still managed to go to Joe's and get in plenty of gaming. We started the night with The Quest for El Dorado. New to me!

I honestly didn't know much about this game other than I wanted to play it and that it was nominated.

So we played, it is a very fast game which is nice. It is however, a race game. Honestly race games are just not my cup of tea and I rarely enjoy them. This does have an added bonus of being a deck builder so, there was hope for me liking this game.

In the game you have a hand of 4 cards and will use all 4 cards each round or discard any remaining that go unused. You will always draw 4 cards when you finish your turn. You use the cards to move across the board and some spaces require more hatchets or paddles to cross than others. It is a race to the finish, however and if you aren't moving then you aren't playing correctly. :P

The cards you can buy are limited and if a slot becomes empty then the next player to buy a card can choose from the "unavailable" stacks and move them to the available stack for others. It is pretty neat.

In our game I was making so many stacks empty and just letting Joe H have a field day with whatever cards he wanted. He ended up winning so I wasn't really doing my due diligence in stopping him, but I was just playing my own game and I was mostly using all of my cards to move further. Joe was buying lots of cards that gave him more card draws which was the ultimate killer for me since I never got one of those cards to allow me to draw more.

I was definitely in a good position, but Dan was right behind me and Geoff was off in LaLa Land so that wasn't so great for him and he disliked the game more than I did.

All in all, I can't say I liked the game so much. I would play it again but it didn't wow me- it just mostly made me say meh. I guess I was hoping for more.

There was a pretty hilarious part in the game where I just stepped in front of Dan blocking him pretty bad for 2 turns then joe stepped in my place. Too funny!!

I found my card!!!

I had brought along Orléans: Deluxe Edition with both expansions- looking to get it played. FINALLY we played it and I was happy to get Michael and Geoff to join me in a game of Orléans: Invasion.

Michael had never played the base game, but I am finding it is quite easy to teach this version as the co-op game for first time players. Since we were only 3 players we get a few more rounds to try and finish everything. The game is still incredibly hard to manage.

This game we got the worst event in the 1st round saying each player in Orleans lose $4. It is just so painful for this event so fast in the game. To start the game with only $1 is a rough way to start.

We eventually found our way and started on our own paths. First round we all got gears. I might have helped form that play a bit with my stressing on how important gears are to the success for winning this game. I was impressed we actually managed to get all of the fortified towers down. I never got a building in this game. I got a lot of gears which resulted in too many brown workers and I just wasn't pulling the discs I needed per round, but I was trying to make it work. I like when one player has the assembly hall so I can toss all of my guys over there and have that player want them.

Michael needed to get to the top of the knowledge track with he got the school to make his grey scholars wildcards. That worked well for him. He managed to get to the top and then the event came out where we had to give up 6 points of knowledge, fortunately Geoff and I had each moved up the track once to lose 4 points but Michael needed to lose 2 and then he wasn't able to get back to the top for the end for.

We didn't win this game. I was close to finishing my personal goal but I needed the 50 points in money and silk/cloth I was just a few points shy of succeeding and Michael was just shy for his as well.

Other wise we did pretty well, but not perfect. All of our fortified towers were complete and most of the goods were stored. Citizens were in place, but we needed more money and more knights to fulfill the walls mission.

This game is so addicting and I just want to play it over and over. I so also want to play the Trade expansion, but I keep coming back to this one. There is just something about it! Geoff said he liked the basic game better, but he hasn't played it as frequently as I have, I think Trade will help that, however. Michael enjoyed it and was happy he got to playing it!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

I missed the start of the game night Kribbeln so I requested it as the final game for Michael. I think Michael was learning this one.

It is easily my go to filler game at the moment. I just love the chunky dice and push your luck aspect to this game. LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

I am not very good at this game though... so there is that. I have to learn to push my luck more. I just surmise everyone will bust and they don't- so then I lose. I seemed to bust a lot more online. :P

There was no hope for me this game I was just not rolling well at all. I am like oh they will all bust for their final Kribbelns and I will get a major catch up at the end of the game. They both proceeded to both make their ridiculous Kribbeln rolls and I lost even harder.

Love this game!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Michael took off and Geoff and I were left to play a 2p game and he hadn't played Hanamikoji. I really wanted to teach him since he should play it. Very cool game!

We ended up playing 2 times when I totally kicked butt in the first game and won in the first round. He was setting up for the second round but I managed to win with 4 influence markers.

The second game went a little different and there was a bit of a tug of war and we had to play 2 rounds to complete. I was dealt 4 x4s in the first round and was like what do I do with this. I ended up doing the 3 cards and hoping Geoff wouldn't pick the 4 and he didn't. later I trashed one of the 4s and then the 4 card split I had a 4 in either stack so I definitely held onto the control of the 4s. Meanwhile I managed to over take the orange 3 and claim the second victory for controlling 4 markers again.

Totally won both games. I think Geoff liked the game but perhaps was not as impressed with my victories as I was. :P

Great game!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

I round a rainbow on my way home- it was HUGE!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Thursday night was Fun Group so I got in some more gaming! I played a round of Toc Toc Woodman. New to me!

That is correct, I had never played this before! It is highly stressful! On your turn you use the hatchet to try and knock off the wood panels but NOT the core center pieces. You get 2 hits and then you pass it around. You go until all of the panels are taken or the whole tower falls over. You get 1 point per panel and -5 points per core! Yikes. There was no way I was getting out of this game with positive points.

I was happy to actually knock a few panels off in my first few turns, but it was inevitable I got some cores and sure enough my end result was quite low with -3.

Fortunately, someone else totally ruined it and ended up with -15 or something. hahaha

Dominic was a pro and totally owned us- I had most of it on video on my Instagram stories- very impressive. I was just at a bad angle... ;)

It was a very cute and fun game, I would happily play it any time.

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

I managed to convince a few folks to play Alicematic Heroes.

This play went pretty well, it was certainly hard to keep track of everyone and who is doing what and who is remembering what rules. I went over the rules and it didn't take as long as I was anticipating. It probably helped that created a video the day before. More on that in a bit.

This game is not that hard once you play a few rounds and it clicks. It seemed to click faster for some players than others. And here I was trying to play the game. Yah I lost this time. But I was still second place. It just goes to show I am a decent and helpful teacher.

Scott ended up winning the game because he had a TON of tokens and we even kept stealing from him, but it was right that we did since he still managed to win the game.

I know I went over several rules and even the end scoring, but not all players were paying attention to me, so it went unheard. Ah well it was a learning game. It was a learning game for me too in how to teach it. Scott was just ahead all game and he had a goal and he stuck to it and ended up beating me I was 46 and he was 51 points. Others were like 5-10 lower than me.

It went over pretty well and I think everyone enjoyed the game. I certainly enjoyed it a lot more. I felt more in control and I read the rules about combat and it all made more sense that I can place my token upside down to claim a territory but it can then later be overtaken by other players for half benefit. This is something I didn't explain in my video since I didn't fully understand it.

My video is a general overview of my opinion of the game and just some explanations on mechanics. But it is not a full review of the rules. It also ended up being longer than I thought it would, I guess I have a lot to say.

All in all, I can't wait to play again!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Rachel and Dominic had to leave soon after so we played a fast game of Numeri. This is one of my favorite fillers. I should really figure out a way to get a copy. I will have to look for it at Essen. I love this one. It is silly, I know but it is just rolling a die and moving your pawn along.

Very easy to teach and play and it went over very nicely. I of course lost horribly. My 5 was still stuck in -2 land. It was just awful. I didn't roll a 5 until half way through the game. This is what I would not advise. I still had 2 pawns off the board when Dominic just completely destroyed us all with a score in the high 100's Rachel was second. I was 3rd and Scott was last.

I at least had my pawns on the multipliers so that helped a little but still really quite bad at this game. I got my #2 all the way up and that is where I got most of my points.

ah well, love this game.

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Those 2 took off and Scott and I played Patchwork. He had never played before so I explained it and we played a game.

It was not going very well for me. I couldn't buy any tile I wanted and my income was very very low. Several turns I had to pass and take buttons so I was highly unproductive. When I did buy tiles, I managed to get BIG tiles so that helped cover my bard and I claimed the 7x7 tile for 7 points. This was my saving grace.

We both had a very low score at the end of the game. I had JUST enough buttons left over from the final income to pay off my debt. I ended with just my 7x7 tile for 7 points.

Scott was still positive but with 2 points at the end. He was able to cover his board a lot better than I was. He probably deserved the win, but that 7x7 wins it again!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Jeff and Joe had finished their game and the 4 of us came together and played Little Devils.

I knew I could teach it and Jeff picked it up recently and was interested in learning so easy peasy.

We played 4 rounds. From this game I can safely say I enjoy the game and that I think it plays more interestingly with more players. 4 wasn't bad but 5 was a lot of fun and 6 I bet is even better to see how people will play.

We all had a bunch of laughs this game when I was getting screwed over and Joe was then getting screwed over. I ended up not losing!!! Despite getting 30 points in one round which is REALLLLLY BAD!

You do not want points in this game. Joe took home the biggest loser title for this game and Jeff cleaned up!

I got dealt some pretty bad cards so that explains that! it is a cute game for sure.

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Saturday Ron came home!!! WOOHOO I was in dire need to play games and at the very top of my list was Bärenpark. New to me!

This has been all over instagram and everywhere so I have been eager to play it. Supposed to be the Cottage Garden Killer- which was already dead to me anyway. I love puzzle type games. And right off the bat I knew I liked this more than Patchwork too. It has the same weight, in that is it pretty light. I can't be so quick to judge, having only played the one time. But, I am feeling good about it.

In the game players will take turns placing a tile to their board that they have collected to place in their park. Depending on what you cover up in your park you will get the option of some tiles. If you cover a wheelbarrow then you get a common green tile, but if you cover the cement truck you get a cool cage for some bears. If you cover up the construction works who are being lazy- you get to expand your park with a new board tile. You will have a total of 4 boards in your park and the first player to cover all 4 tiles- triggers the end game and other players get one more final turn. Every board has a black pit of doom and you can only cover that space if you complete every other space on that board, then you get a statue worth some number of points.

You can choose to play with common goals for all player and when you meet those conditions you get additional points. I don't see why you wouldn't play with these and Ron and I choose to play with them on the first game- I liked it a lot.

In my game we had the common goal of getting 3 yellow cages in our park, one of each type of smaller cage, and 6 connecting green tiles, which is a lot harder than it sounds like. I managed to get all of the bonus tiles and Ron missed one since I screwed him out of getting a 3rd yellow cage.

He was also completing his boards quickly and getting more points from that. I was doing pretty well and got some high valued tiles but it was just not enough to beat the Ron. He won the game with 98 points to my 95 points! I thought I had it too!!! Noooooo.

Anyway, it was a great first play and I had a lot of fun with it. Very light and easy and I could play for any filler game needed. I liked it. I also understand some of the criticisms I have been hearing and why people don't like it. I just don't agree!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

I really wanted to play Numeracy Legends and The Gluttony Dragon. New to me!

Ron read the rules for that one and we played the final game in the trilogy! This is a game one vs many. I got to play as the Dragon and Ron was 3 of the 4 characters to try and defeat me!

It is simultaneous card selection and the first thing that happens in the round is that the dragon draws 2 cards and keeps one and then gives the other one to the heroes. They must decide among themselves who to advance the powers for. Each player has shield points to help protect against a certain attack, and each player has bonuses for a type of attack when they perform it.

At the same time all players then choose the attach type 1 of 3 and they all do damage equal to the other players choice of attack. It is all about knowing what the other player will do or what you think they might do.

As the dragon I take all damage from all players but then my one attack gets all of them and I start with 30 health and they get 10. Now, if they get down to 1 life they are not out and will still attack. Non-player elimination. So the dragon cant focus all of his time one one player at a time, because even if he gets them out they are still attacking.

We used the optional summon power cards which are one shot deals. This card saved me since it gave me 6 life and I was down to 6 remaining life when I finally won the game against Ron. He was saying it was pretty hard to win as the adventurers, but I am actually not so sure. It is more likely to do well with them since there is so much range of variety of attacks. Ron was just choosing his attacks poorly.

this was the first game that I could read Ron's strategy better than he could read mine. I was shocked! It worked so well for me and I ended up the winner! Woohoo!!

I was special and used Unicorn Poo as my health marker. It was too cute not to and if I can't use Unicorn poo in this game then what game could I use it? Good question.

All in all this game was amazingly fun and I think it is a great kids game along with the others in the trilogy. Probably not a game I will revisit a whole lot, but when Ron's niece is of age then I think I will get more plays from it. Of course I will be happy to play if it is ever suggested and I will probably suggest it at times. :) I liked it a lot!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

I don't usually count games on the Ipad but since it was an amazing game played- I am going to count it for the blog. Ron and I played Le Havre on the Ipad.

I managed to pick up a Wharf and the shipping line, my two most favorite buildings. I shipped like 4 times. It was an amazing game for me. It was also a weird game in that not all of the buildings were bought so on the final final turn I managed to pick up both buildings that score for types of buildings collected. These were still in the construction zone so I just had to spend the resources. It was very odd and satisfying move for me.

Ron had an amazing building that i hadn't seen before and it gave fish = number of fish buildings you have and coal = number of hammer buildings you have. And I had a lot! that was a sweet sweet building and I used it often. Closer to the end of the game I collected 21 wood in a turn... yeah it was intense and awesome. I ended up using nearly all of it by the end.

I owned them, them being Ron and the computer! It was amazing.

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Sunday we had 5 players for a quick game of Rolling Japan. I am always happy to play this one. I love seeing all of the realizations on the faces with how badly they have placed numbers etc.

There is no correct answer since you simply don't know what numbers will be rolled when.

I ended up losing and it was quite impressive all of the scores were 11,12,13,14,15 right around the circle. I don't know how many were cheating or missed a few placements. Its hard to keep track of 3 new players in this game. But Evan ended up winning with 11. ;)

Love it!

jason showed up and then we played the very fast Rolling Tokyo too. He had sorta remembered how to play from last time but I went over the rules so brief and he was underway. It was going just fine, as it does, but yeah that ended soon :P

3 way tied for the win at 9 points. We did well! :P I guess. Love it!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

I duno how I got coaxed into playing Skull but I am counting it even though I didn't play the full game. I played a few rounds and called it quits cause I hated it so much. hahaha I would have rather socialized so I feel badly about it, but I don't.

Everyone else played for another 45 minutes I think and I was like wow I would rather not play. So, I reduced my rating on this game since I just don't like it. Never again.

Of just for the record I got it perfect when I guessed 6 on the first round with no anti and 6 players - boom like a boss.

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Highlight of the night was Vinhos Deluxe Edition.

Jason was learning the game and I am grateful to Evan for teaching the game. Ron was also playing. :D

This game I tried to play my strategy again but better and I did an amazing job. I had all fields growing even if they were baby little whines and a few wineries hosting my valuables.

I presented to the fair early on almost all occasions and scored last place for each round. But, it didn't matter, I held on to my most valuable wines and exported them for points. I also got some very nice scoring bonus tiles at the end. 22 points for my wine experts, 16 points for the green and purple tiles, 9 points for the white winery workers, another 14 points for the unused tokens left on my player board. It was quite excellent to finally win this game.

I worked hard at shaping this strategy and it worked especially well now after 4 plays. I do wonder if it is the only way I will play this game. I always seem to gear towards it. I never do well at the fair, I don't really know how. I always end up last! :P

Anyway I was super happy to play this again and with friends! It was a great game. I think Jason had a good time with it and ended up in 3rd place in front of Evan. Ron was second and pretty close to my score maybe like 15 points behind.

mwwaaahahaha

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Nearing the end of the night but Nathan joined in and we played a 5 player game of Zing!.

I haven't actually played this edition of the game so I was quite pleased with it! The tokens say exactly how much you lose at the end of the round. Brilliant! Jason and Evan hadn't played this game before and were learning. You could tell Evan was not really into trick taking games, but he was still a sport at playing it through even though we kept throwing negative points at him.

Jason caught on faster and was even tied in the lead with me in round 4/5 so it was a close one. In the final round though I didn't take any additional points and everyone else was getting screwed over. :)

I ended up winning with 11 points but, I should have done better. there is always one round where I just fail at and that was round 3 when Ron stuck me with 2x -3 tokens from steven seagal.

It is such a great game I am so happy we got to play it. Nathan also brought Land Unter so we will have to play that soon. Love it!

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

Final game of the night was 4 player Kribbeln.

Always happy to play this one and even though it was like 1am we still played. I think I taught it and we played.

It is really an easy one to catch on to. Just Roll better. Jason was the king of rolling better and totally destroyed us all this game. There was no competition even. I didn't even lose! Ron did very poorly.

I ended up getting a 33 Kribbeln on the FIRST one so ended up not taking it and taking an X for the line instead, so that was terrible and awesome all at once. I was like REALLLY? So unfair. :P

Awesome game and well done to Jason.

:star::nostar::star::nostar::star::nostar::star:

This week I did a video on Alicematic Heroes. I only played it the one time before doing the video and this was mostly off the cuff. Probably why it was so long. It is just a general overview and not full rules explanation. I didn't explain it all the way but it is enough for you to get the sense if you were to like the game or not. I hope you enjoy it.

Hope not. I just bought the reprint and am a sucker for deluxe editions...

Considering that the game was just reprinted with all the promo content included, I highly doubt it.

That's what this reprint is for. We simply didn't want to wait another year to release it since the game has been OOP for so long.

I'm assuming you mean Mayfair, not Mayday. I don't know much about any differences though as we have the original "Australian" edition. Check the forums though, I am sure this has been discussed before.
