Oh. And I really like Le Havre - not the iOS version. Which is ok of course, but not as good as the board game version. Which I like better than the iOS version.

Oh dang. Did I post about the iOS version? But I was saying I don't like it as well.

Hope that is still ok.

Just so I'm completely clear......we're NOT supposed to post about the IOS version of Le Havre in this thread. I guess that means ME. OOPS.

All the iOS spam here is driving me crazy. I am subscribed to this game entry so I can read about and discuss the board game. Please keep the iOS talk out.

What the man says. Threads specific to the iOS app belong in the VGG entry. They do not belong here. Please don't post them here. If you see one posted here, flag it as wrong forum and a moderator will move it there.

Thanks!

With two days to go until the first successful month, I am seeking game recommendations

by N H

So I am starting to count my chickens before they hatch, and have been obsessively looking at games that I can get for my success this month.

First my brag: I have maintained at least a half hour of exercise and maintained my caloric goals for the last month. I lost 8 pounds, and have have improved my resting pulse and endurance considerably.

The problem I run into is this: I have recently been buying games that play in about an hour, but I am beginning to feel that I have too many games of that style in my collection. So I start thinking about larger games. But the longer games that I love that I currently own (CitOW, BSG, Tikal, and Puerto Rico) just don't get played, and the possibilities of getting them to the table seems to be less and less.

Second problem is that I rarely have more than one opponent. I play against my brother or against my girlfriend, but rarely at the same time. Due to schedule issues, playing with 4 or 5 almost never happens, and 3 is only a little better.

The games I have been eyeing up recently include:
Age of Steam or one of the other permutations of it
Le Havre
Lords of Waterdeep
Mice and Mystics
Through the Ages
Galaxy Trucker
Merchants of Venus
Merchants and Mauraders
Android Netrunner
Troyes
Kings of Tokyo
Alien Frontiers
Kingsburg
Macao
Genoa
Wiz War

Please do not limit yourself to those options, but what do you think I should get?

Tabulation of the Games Recommendation Thread

Wow that last thread got a huge response. I have attempted to tabulate here people's responses (probably incorrectly). I realize now that maybe a poll would have been a better way to do this, but I will be counting each recommendation as +1 for that game, and every warning against a game as a -1

Age of Steam or one of the other permutations of it
Le Havre +2
Lords of Waterdeep +4
Mice and Mystics +2
Through the Ages +2
Galaxy Trucker -1
Merchants of Venus +1
Merchants and Mauraders +2
Android Netrunner +3
Troyes +4
King of Tokyo -1
Alien Frontiers +2
Kingsburg +1
Macao +5
Genoa -1
Wiz War

Also submitted - Core Worldsx3, Battles of Westeros (by geekmail), Dungeon Fighter, Atlantis Rising, Castles of Burgundy x3, Caylus, Agricola: All Creatures, Solo Gaming (Mage Knight, D&D Ravenloft, Thunderbolt Apache Leader), Fortune and Glory, Claustrophobia x2, Cyclades, Hansa Teutonica, Trajan, Ora et Labora, D-Day Dice, Luna

So given that list, I would say the top contenders are
1. Macao
2. Troyes
3. Lords of Waterdeep
4. Android: Netrunner
5. Core Worlds
6. Castles of Burgundy

Honorable mention goes to Through the Ages, Le Havre, Merchants and Marauders,Claustrophobia and Mice and Mystics for their +2 results.

Tonight or tomorrow morning it is off to the game store (Dream Wizards in Rockville, MD most likely) to see what their selections hold (I love the feeling of buying a game and not having to wait for it to arrive).

In the meantime, I will send BGG links to all six of those games to my girlfriend so she can give her reactions.

As a side note, instead of using my weekly reward on a CD this week, despite my roll and interest, I have decided to use it on a book, specifically the third book in the Foundation Series. I have read the first two, and just got my hands on the fifth, so I want to fill in the gap before I plunge ahead.

Why not? There's no rule preventing that from happening!

Its kinda misleading to those who want to buy the board game version (such as myself). Looking at the ratings, I don't know if people are rating the game highly because of the ios or the board game version. What if the board game version sucks and the ios is version is really good?

In my opinion the rating on BGG should reflect the board game version only. There should be somewhere else to rate the ios version.

I have not bought this game yet. But I will be dissapointed if the high rating only applies to the IOS version (which would be less fiddly than the board game).

Your point is well taken.

My take is that the BGG rankings are dominated mainly by people who have played the board game version. However, I was reading a post within the "Caylus" forums that said that Caylus had recently gotten itself back into the top 10 due to the increased exposure and popularity of the ios version. Other BGG members, feel free to give your two cents on this matter here, or even better maybe in another forum thread.

My take on the top-most similarity and difference between the board and ios version of Le Havre are (and I've played both versions):

Similarity 1 - There is no loss in translation of the game play mechanics between board and ios versions (in my mind this is probably the most critical factor). With that said, I know there are some programming mistakes in the ios version (i.e. you can't over pay for energy and you can't take francs as your final action). I'm sure the next version will fix these issues. Since the game mechanics are the same, specific strategies, or lack thereof, will probably have the same bearing on the outcome of a game. So there is consistency there.

Difference 1 - The ios version obviously cuts down on the storage, organization, set up, and chitty nature of the game making for a very streamlined experience. I would say this is a major bonus.

My conversion to liking the game had very little to do with the differences between the board and ios versions, but rather, I learned how to play the game better, and when and where to employ different strategies. It is a fantastic game.
