The city is growing. You need to fuel that expansion.

I think of it as paying workers.

It is a little bit of a pasted-on mechanic, but it's not that much of a stretch.

What does it mean? Is it that you can't buy it with Francs, but you can build it with resources?

would be happy for a clarification here!

You are correct.

You should notice that "build" and "buy" in Le Havre are two very different things. Build is an action that you do using resources, and by putting your worker in one of the buildings that allow you to build. Buy (and Sell) are never actions. In your turn, before or after your action, you can build and sell as much buildings you wish, using francs when buying and receiving half amount of francs when selling.

I'm curious what the OP said that made you think this needed to be explained. It looks to me like they clearly understand the difference between buying and building.

It's not so much the OP as the title of the thread. While first post shows an understanding of the difference, that the question arose indicates it wasn't fully understood. Paulo's response just elaborates on how the two functions work, as the context of the question may point to a misunderstanding of what it means to buy a bulding with francs vs. "buying a building by paying the necessary resources."

Hello,

this is news for everybody who like me is eagerly awaiting a new print run of Le Havre. I was contacting Lookout Games yesterday and they told me/confirmed, that there will be a new print run of Le Havre some time next year (no confirmed date, yet). I asked f I can share this information and they said that that would be nice - which gives me a good feeling that is actually going to happen (like Agricola)

Cheers,
Michael

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I am shocked. Not only have I been playing this wrong but everyone I've ever seen play it, plays it wrong.

But I finally understand why the game comes with so many loan cards!

I'm surprised people are playing it wrong. The rules are really clear, and there's even a little sidebar to reinforce it.

Marty's October 2016 Play Summary

by Marty Strubczewski

I played some really great games in October. My appreciation for Uwe Rosenberg has grown significantly. Read on to find out why!

New to me Games:

*NO SPOILERS*
Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 - 16 Solo Plays

This is a beast of a game. There was no way for me to finish it with a dedicated group so I took on the endeavor solo. And it was fan freaking-tastic. If you love board games there is no reason you won't cherish your experience with Pandemic Legacy. This game has every right to be #1. It's not my favorite game of all time but it is one of my favorite gaming experiences. I think the secret to why this is so good is because the game is based on a familiar and successful design of Pandemic. Where other legacy games like Seafall will suffer because you are teaching a new game as you progress from game to game. Simplicity and familiarity will make it difficult for any game to top this gem. Loved it.

Dominion - 8 Plays (2 Player)

Finally played the famous Dominion. It is very dry but mechanically sound. The game is simple to learn and teach. Dominion plays relatively quickly too. If you are a fan of building a combo that spans several minutes to play out while your opponents watch in envy, then look no further. I however do not enjoy competitive combo exploitation. Dominion is a good game but as time has shown, many expansions were needed to keep it fresh and interesting. For me, it's shelf life has expired. I predict the 2nd edition to fall into the same cycle.

Cry Havoc - 3 Plays (3 Player)

I wrote a mini-review. You can check it out in the review section of Cry Havoc. Was very high on this game initially. My excitement has tamed down a bit with more plays. I Still think it is a great game for those yearning for asymmetric area control. I did find that 3 player games turned into Machine vs Humans and the Pilgrims doing their own thing with building a crystal engine. So at this time I do not recommend 3 player. Two player was fun and I have yet to try it at 4 players. I am intrigued by the expansion announcement.
[BGCOLOR=#66FF99] 8/10 [/BGCOLOR] - On the fence pending 4 player game

Caverna: The Cave Farmers - 1 Solo Play

I really enjoy Agricola. It's very tight and demanding. Caverna provides the opposite experience. It's loose and open in its sandbox delivery. There is no definitive which one is better. The question is which one is better for you? If you want massive replaybility, tight play, and agonizing decisions; go for Agricola. If you love casual farming and the proposition for obtaining goodies through expeditions; go for Caverna. I love them both and don't see a reason to get rid of one for the other.
[BGCOLOR=#009999]9/10[/BGCOLOR] - Top 20 game

A Feast for Odin - 2 Solo Plays

See my mini-review for my full thoughts. In summary, this is one of the best games to come out this year. Uwe hit it out of the park with this worker placement & puzzle conglomeration. This is one of the those games that gets better with each play. So much to explore and so many people to introduce this game to. Can't wait.
[BGCOLOR=#009900]10/10[/BGCOLOR] - Top 10 game

Clank! - 2 Plays (2 Player)

Soooooo good. Clank! is hopefully the driver that propels this new genre of deck building board games. It is so well implemented here that you should never play Ascension. I'm not even a fan of press your luck strategies but they really did something great with Clank! The angst, the fun of delving deeper and the risk/reward management of the clank cubes creates a pleasant yet deeply satisfying experience. Highly recommend this one. Just thinking about it makes me want to play again.
[BGCOLOR=#66FF99] 8/10 [/BGCOLOR] - Top 30 game

Oldies but Goodies:

Terra Mystica - 15 Plays (4 Players)

I love Terra Mystica. I probably play it too much. I'm getting close to 40 plays in a span of 3 months. The challenge and faction variety keeps me coming back. I have grown to appreciate each faction for their unique approach to build a coherent engine. Not many games capture my excitement for this hobby like Terra Mystica does.
[BGCOLOR=#009900]10/10[/BGCOLOR]

Codenames - 6 Plays (5 Players)

I'm not a fan of party games or deduction games. This one however I quite enjoy. It's a simple, easy to teach game. With moments that either make you feel like a genius or dumb as a rock. Everyone loves it and its my go to game for the casual non-gamer group.
[BGCOLOR=#009999]9/10[/BGCOLOR]

7 Wonders Duel - 1 Play

A science victory!!! So it is possible to win collecting 6 science symbols. It is still harder to pull off then a traditional victory point strategy but I like that it is there to threaten your opponent. The Pantheon expansion is right around the corner.
[BGCOLOR=#009999]9/10[/BGCOLOR]

Le Havre - 1 Play (3 Players)

Had an itch to play a quick game on my phone. I tried a new strategy that involved buying as many buildings as I could. I struggled feeding my workers quite a bit but still won by 9 points (95/86/54). I really want to play the game in person as my desire to play the app is dwindling.
[BGCOLOR=#33FFFF]7/10[/BGCOLOR]

The Prodigals Club - 1 Play (3 Players)

Taught the game to 2 new players. Missed out on some combos that my friends took full advantage off. I stuck to a balanced strategy and got 2nd place with 11 points. The winner won at 4 points. Prodigals club is about forming combos and creating bonuses to make the best use of your action cards. Really good game with an interesting theme but I would rather play some of my other worker placement games. Like A Feast for Odin!!!
[BGCOLOR=#33FFFF]7/10[/BGCOLOR]

German Railroads - 1 Solo Play

One of my favorite worker placement games. I love the snowball effect in scoring. This was one of my weaker performances at 338 points. I did a little too much tinkering but I'm ok with a low score if I get to explore different avenues. American Railroads can't come soon enough!!!!
[BGCOLOR=#009900]10/10[/BGCOLOR]

Is it really fair to expect people to read the rules?

Of course I'm being facetious but I would bet that MOST people have never read the rules, they just play after being TAUGHT by someone who should have read the rules.
