Review: Le Havre:: Don't Give Up on Le Havre - An Evolving Experience

Quickly to give some background, I'm a relative newcomer to the BGG community, but a long time lover of boardgames. This is my first attempt at a "real" review. The purpose of this review is to prevent any recent players or purchasers of Le Havre to give up on the game too soon. I made this mistake, traded the game away (albeit for TI3, which I love), but dearly regret not having it in my collection at the current moment. Thankfully Sage Games released in ios format.

The following are my own comments and thoughts on the game as over the past 8 months. These comments make up the body and content of the review. Upon its conclusion I have deferred all other writings/musings about the game JohnRayJr.'s "Landmark Game" post.

12.2011 - The test of time will tell if this game is upgraded to a 10 ranking. I have only played the game twice, but I love the simple game mechanics and the deep and nuanced strategy.

1.3.2012 - Now, in light of playing Puerto Rico (another resource, economics type of game) Le Havre is no longer my favorite in this type of eurogame, thus the reason the decrease in ranking from 9.5 to 7.

2.2012 - Game traded for Power Grid. Le Havre 6th spot on the BGG confuses me a bit. I can see the appeal of wide open choices, but the game mechanics seem so loose that they didn't provide an satisfying game experience after a few plays. I wanted more from the game. Then after playing Puerto Rico, I knew that it was not going to get to the table ever again. Both games are resource efficiency/production games (like any good Euro) but PR does it better. Therefore it truly is a game I could take or leave (Rating Edit: 2.8.12 - 7 to a 5)

8.2012 - I have seen the light. After giving Le Havre another try via ios/iPad, I have discovered the depth and richness of Le Havre. Since trading the game back in February, I acquired Caylus and have played it a handful of times (about equal to the number of Le Havre plays). The reasons I originally liked the game, as described in my 1st post regarding this game, still stand. The simple mechanics of the game make it very easy to understand what you can do on your turn. Figuring out what is the "best" choice with the simple things you can do on this turn is what makes this game shine. I'm addicted to the game and cannot stop thinking about the different strategies (coke/steel vs. grain and cattle vs. shipping line, etc.) I defer to JohnRayJr "Landmark Game" for a superior description and review of Le Havre.

Happy Gaming everyone.

I did. Your resource income stream is 2 random bays of stuff. Hard to plan production.

"random" seems a bit harsh, considering after the first round you know exactly what is coming and when

So you skipped the part of the rules where the ships move, the offer spaces accumulate, and you can collect the offer spaces as your action for the turn? You just pulled the supply tokens from a bag and received whatever goods were on them?

Yeah, I can see how you wouldn't like the game as much.

Nice summary Benson. Played this 12 times this last week and upgraded my rating to a 10. It is perfect. My wife recently won this by selling smoked fish and meat sandwiches after buying two special buildings. So many viable strategies when you gradually get to know the game. Plays quite differently with 2,3,4 or 5 players as well.

Thread: Le Havre:: General:: iOS bug? Incorrect resource conversion

I noticed on several occasions when using buildings such as the brickworks, the game will allow me to choose to convert more clay than I actually have. For instance, if I have 7 clays available, the game will allow me to convert up to 9 on the picker, but only give me the 7 that I actually have BUT I have to pay the energy cost as if I had 9 clays and I receive the subsidy amount as if I had 9. Has anyone else noticed this issue?

Are you sure you aren't ALSO converting bricks you already have? Remember, brick is clay and, thus, may be converted to brick again.

Yes, it seems to happen when you already have some of the "upgraded" resource already. I noticed it when I was trying to add 4 more brick to my 1 brick...sneaky!

This is what is happening. It is perfectly legal and implemented properly.

This is one of the nuances of the game and strategy that I absolutely love (special buildings, especially if your resource pool is set up to capitalize on them when they turn up).

I was playing a 2 player ios game and the Baguette Shop turned up during the last 3rd of the game. I just happen to have enough bread and fish to sell for francs! This helped tip the game in my favor.

Have you discovered any "general" strategies that always seem to be useful no matter the game circumstances, or any "specific" strategies that are very dominant in certain situations?

The special buildings are brilliant - adds loads more theme to the game.

Not sure if I am just tating the obvious..... Coke and steel will always make loads of money through ship building or shipping if done well is a potential winner.

The wind farm worked really well with a shipping strategy if you had the shipping line, abbatoir, tannery and feedlot though of course which special buildings come up is anyone's guess! Genius.

You are correct, sir! Not a bug at all, just my lack of understanding of the game mechanics. I knew you could use brick for clay, but I didn't know it worked in this manner as well. My bad. Thanks for enlightening me!

Has anyone else experienced a double final turn where you pay food costs, do your final turn, then are asked to pay food costs and do your final turn again? I was playing with 3 players (one of which was AI) over the internet.

I had something like that happen before the first update. I haven't played more than a game or two online since. Maybe the issue hasn't been resolved.

One bug that really drives me crazy is the bug where the game requires exact food costs to pay for shipping. So if I have 3 ships, I can't pay with 1 coke. I don't know if this bug happens every time, but it has cost me a game.

It takes a few plays to get used to how the buildings interact before you can start on the nuances of strategy. As you get into the game you start to see more options but once you spot a killer strategy your opponents will soon move to block it. It is one of those games where the group learning experience is really good.

I have tried the loans route (don't bother with food just rack up the debt, then use the riches gained with all those actions you didn't use to generate food to pay off your debts at the end of the game).

Lately I have been targeting buying a ship really early (build a building, then selling it, grab francs, sell wood). Although it is only worth a few VP's it can bring around 40 food over the duration of the long game.

It also helps to be able to adapt to opportunities, unusually in my last game the Black market was on top of one of the build piles. I went last but the other two players didn't notice the opportunity. Iron and cattle had not come up so I bought it and swiped two iron and two cattle as my first action!

That bug has been fixed. Update your game.

This is what I failed to understand over the first 3 plays. I traded away the game because the most of the games went like this: (Get fish go to the smoke house. Get cattle, go to the abottoir. Get frustrated because you can barely buy wooden ships. Conclude the game is broken because who can ever do the thing necessary to make steel to make a steel ship let a lone a luxury liner).

Love the loans route. This seems to be a dominant mindset of mine as during plays 5-10. However, I have noticed there seems to be an optimal number of loans one can carry and still win (2-4 loans). 6+ I've never been able to recover from.

It seems like knowing when to target ships within the context of the current layout of buildings within each game is an art that is only mastered through experience. Target them too soon and you miss out on building buildings. Target them too late and you seem to be scrambling for food while everyone else acquires the high-end resources (coke and steel) or capitalizes on currency creating special buildings that are revealed in the last third of the game. I LOVE this aspect of the game - timing the building of ship just right.

It is situations like these that make Le Havre shine IMHO. Were you snickering to yourself when you pulled this move off as if you had just stolen something and gotten away with it?
